The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has conducted a significant enforcement operation at M/s Femina Shopping Mall Private Limited, located on Williams Road in Tiruchirappalli. This action took place on July 31, 2026, following credible reports concerning the sale of non-certified products within the establishment. The operation was executed under Section 28 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, by a team led by Rino John S, Scientist-E and Director, alongside Arivazhagan A, Scientist-D and Joint Director.

Details of the Seized Products

Upon inspection, BIS officials discovered an assortment of items that necessitate compulsory BIS certification but were lacking the required ISI Standard Mark. The operation led to the confiscation of diverse product categories, which included electric and non-electric toys, stainless steel potable water bottles, domestic stainless steel vacuum flasks, stainless steel utensils, and electric food mixers. The total value of these seized items exceeded Rs 5 lakh.

The enforcement action was initiated after investigators had received reliable information about the mall’s alleged practice of stocking products that did not comply with mandatory BIS certification. Such violations prompted the regulatory agency to intervene to safeguard consumer interests and promote compliance.

Ramesh K, the Director and Head of the BIS Coimbatore Branch Office, announced that legal proceedings would be initiated against those responsible for these infractions. According to Section 28 of the BIS Act, 2016, first-time offenders face penalties that could include imprisonment for up to two years, a minimum fine of Rs 2 lakh, or penalties extending up to ten times the value of the goods involved.

Public Safety and Consumer Awareness

BIS officials have underscored the importance of consumer safety, warning that the sale and use of uncertified or sub-standard products pose significant risks. They have advised consumers to purchase only those products that bear the genuine ISI Mark, accompanied by the appropriate Indian Standard number and a valid CM/L licence number, which can be verified using the BIS CARE App.

Furthermore, the agency has called upon manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers to ensure adherence to the BIS Act, 2016, as well as the applicable Quality Control Orders. It has been highlighted that failing to secure mandatory BIS certification not only jeopardises public safety but also invites legal repercussions.

In an effort to encourage public vigilance, BIS has urged citizens to report any suspected misuse of the ISI Mark or the sale of uncertified products to the nearest BIS office or via the BIS CARE App. Complaints related to BIS-certified products are also welcome at the BIS Coimbatore Branch Office.
