Apple Adjusts Prices for MacBook and iPad Models Due to Increased AI-Driven Memory Costs

The CSR Journal Magazine

Apple has officially revised the prices of several MacBook and iPad models, along with its HomePod and Apple TV products, due to rising costs in memory and storage chips. This adjustment comes in response to a dramatic increase in demand associated with the artificial intelligence sector, which has significantly impacted manufacturing expenses.

The price hikes have particularly affected the MacBook Air, which now starts at Rs 1,49,900, up from Rs 1,19,900. Similarly, the MacBook Pro featuring the M5 chip and 16GB of RAM has seen its price rise to Rs 2,39,900 from Rs 1,69,900. The iPad Air with 128GB of storage has also experienced a considerable increase, now priced at Rs 89,900, up from Rs 69,900.

Impact of Memory Component Prices

Apple attributes the need for these price revisions to a staggering rise in memory prices, primarily influenced by the rapid growth of global AI data centres. Manufacturers of memory components have reportedly prioritised supply for AI chipmakers, resulting in reduced availability for consumer electronics. This situation has contributed to a significant rise in prices across the industry’s product ranges.

Reports indicate that during the first quarter of 2026, prices for Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM), a crucial element in smartphones, laptops, and tablets, have surged by as much as 98%. Industry forecasts suggest that these prices are likely to increase further in the current quarter, exacerbating the situation faced by manufacturers.

With this ongoing supply crunch, analysts predict that the consumer electronics sector may face a broader impact, leading other manufacturers in the PC and smartphone markets to likely follow Apple’s pricing strategy for their future devices.

Future Considerations for Apple and Its Customers

Despite maintaining strong partnerships with suppliers, Apple recognises that it can no longer entirely absorb the rising costs of components. The company continues to seek strategies to manage these increased expenses while striving to uphold product quality and ensure its long-term profitability.

Market analysts believe that if memory prices remain high, Apple may ultimately reassess its pricing strategy for iPhones in the upcoming months, although no modifications have been confirmed at this point. This potential change reflects the company’s response to evolving market pressures surrounding component costs.

The recent price adjustments underscore the significant influence of the AI boom on consumer technology sectors. The heightened demand for advanced memory chips is reshaping supply chains and driving up expenses throughout the electronics landscape, ultimately affecting consumers and manufacturers alike.
