Another Hindu Man Beaten to Death with Shovel in Bangladesh After Spat with Customer

The CSR Journal Magazine

A fresh incident of mob violence has shaken Bangladesh, with a Hindu trader beaten to death in the Kaliganj area of Gazipur district following a minor dispute at his shop.

The victim, identified as Liton Chandra Ghosh (also known as Kali), 55, owned Baishakhi Sweetmeat and Hotel on Baranagar Road. According to local media, the incident occurred on Saturday morning after a verbal argument broke out between a customer and a teenage employee.

Argument Escalates Into Brutal Assault

Police and eyewitness accounts said the dispute began around 11 am when a 28-year-old man, Masum Mia, argued with a 17-year-old shop worker, Ananta Das, over a trivial issue. As tensions escalated, Liton Ghosh intervened to protect the employee and defuse the situation.

However, the confrontation soon turned violent. Masum Mia’s parents — Mohammad Swapan Mia (55) and Majeda Khatun (45) — allegedly arrived at the spot and joined the assault.
During the chaos, Ghosh was reportedly struck on the head with a shovel by one of the attackers. He sustained critical injuries and died on the spot.

Police Action and Local Anger

The killing triggered outrage in the locality, prompting police to rush to the scene and restore order. Residents detained Masum Mia and his parents and later handed them over to the police. Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Zakir Hossain confirmed that all three suspects have been taken into custody. The body was sent for post-mortem examination, and authorities said a detailed investigation is underway.

Residents have demanded a fair probe and strict legal action, saying the incident has created fear and insecurity, particularly among minority communities.

Another Killing Fuels Alarm

The murder comes just a day after another violent death involving a Hindu man. On Friday, Ripon Saha, a fuel-station worker, was crushed to death while trying to stop a black SUV from fleeing without paying for fuel worth ₹3,710 at a petrol pump. Police arrested the vehicle owner, Abul Hashem alias Sujan, a former BNP treasurer in Rajbari district, and his driver.

Rising Concerns Over Minority Safety

Both incidents have intensified concerns over rising mob violence in Bangladesh. In recent months, several lynching cases, including the killing and burning of garment worker Dipu Chandra Das over alleged blasphemy, have drawn attention to the growing vulnerability of minority communities.
