Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has appealed to the public to remain vigilant against elements that threaten the country’s enduring harmony. His remarks were made during the Janmashtami celebrations held in Dhaka on Thursday.

Participating in a state-sponsored reception at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium, Rahman addressed members of the Hindu community, acknowledging their contributions and highlighting the need for unity during uncertain times.

Rahman noted the historical coexistence of various faiths in Bangladesh and emphasised the importance of mutual respect among communities. He insisted that recent incidents, allegedly incited through social media, aimed to destabilise this peaceful coexistence.

Warnings Against Division and Tension

The Prime Minister expressed concern over recurrent attempts to sow discord and provoke communal strife. He stated, “We must all remain vigilant so that anti-social forces cannot raise their heads again and that no one can destroy the existing atmosphere of harmony.”

Rahman urged the public to be proactive in preventing communal unrest, asserting that distinction based on political beliefs, religion, or ethnicity should not lead to division among citizens. He firmly stated that every individual in Bangladesh has the right to religious freedom and safety.

He reiterated the idea that unity transcends any labels of ‘minority’ or ‘majority’, saying, “Let us all consider ourselves Bangladeshis.” This call for solidarity reflects his commitment to upholding the nation’s diverse fabric amidst rising tensions.

Challenges Faced by Minority Communities

In recent years, various rights organisations have been vocal about the conditions facing minority communities in Bangladesh. Groups such as Amnesty International have urged the government to take immediate steps to assure the protection of these groups, highlighting the need for systemic change.

The Bangladesh government has previously asserted that most episodes of violence against minorities stem from political rivalries or common criminal behaviour, rather than being seen as systematic religious persecution. This assertion underscores the complexity of the issues at hand.

During the event, Rahman rewarded priests and sebaits with honouraria, acknowledging their service and contributions to society. He reiterated that unity and vigilance are vital to ensuring the continuity of peace and harmony across communities.

The Prime Minister’s appeal reflects a broader commitment to foster inclusivity and to combat any social forces aiming to undermine the nation’s pluralism. He called on every citizen to stand together against all forms of division and discord.
