Annamalai Quits BJP, Announces New Political Movement Ahead Of Tamil Nadu Polls

The CSR Journal Magazine

Annamalai has revealed plans to establish a new political movement aimed at contesting the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. This declaration was made shortly after he officially resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In his statement, Annamalai expressed his commitment to advancing political representation in Tamil Nadu through this new platform.

During his announcement, Annamalai clarified that he had communicated his intention to the BJP ahead of the recent elections in Tamil Nadu. He mentioned an internal struggle between his identity as a Tamilian and his role within the BJP. On December 4, 2025, he signalled his intent to resign, although the party requested he remain until the conclusion of the elections.

His decision follows a period of dissatisfaction regarding differing viewpoints on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. Annamalai expressed gratitude for the support he received from BJP leaders throughout his tenure, indicating a respectful but firm departure from the party.

Resignation From the BJP

Upon resigning from the BJP, Annamalai submitted a letter thanking the party leadership for their consistent backing over the years. He elaborated that fundamental disagreements regarding the political approaches toward Tamil Nadu influenced his choice to leave the party. Annamalai underscored the importance of having aligned perspectives on regional issues.

The BJP’s National President, Nitin Nabin, formally accepted Annamalai’s resignation the same day. This resignation comes in the wake of considerable speculation regarding Annamalai’s future political endeavours, particularly after the BJP’s disappointing performance in the recent assembly elections, where it garnered only three per cent of the vote share while contesting on 27 seats in alliance with AIADMK.

This political shift positions Annamalai to potentially lead a fresh political initiative, as evidenced by the emergence of posters in Coimbatore promoting his leadership with slogans aimed at rallying supporters. Such developments further reflect the anticipation among local political observers and his supporters regarding his next steps.

Political Context and Future Goals

The political landscape in Tamil Nadu has been somewhat challenging for the BJP, especially following the party’s performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Annamalai had previously helped the BJP increase its vote share to 11 per cent, a significant improvement from three per cent. However, despite this increase, the party was unable to secure any parliamentary seats.

Further complicating matters was Annamalai’s deteriorating relationship with AIADMK, which eventually contributed to his replacement as the state party chief by Nainar Nagendran in 2025. This context underscores a need for a strategic reassessment of political tactics in Tamil Nadu, as Annamalai embarks on this new path.

In light of these factors, Annamalai’s new movement may aim to forge a distinct identity separate from the BJP, focusing on regional issues and engaging directly with the electorate. His ability to mobilise support could be a critical factor as he seeks to gain influence in the forthcoming state elections.
