Amit Shah Advises Rahul Gandhi to Learn Speaking Skills from Priyanka Gandhi

The CSR Journal Magazine

On Friday, Home Minister Amit Shah made a pointed remark directed at Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi during a session in the Lok Sabha. Shah suggested that Gandhi should “learn the art of speaking” from his senior counterparts, including his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. This comment emerged during Shah’s response to the ongoing debate on the Women’s Reservation Bill and the Delimitation Bill, where he expressed concern over the tone and language employed by Gandhi in his recent addresses.

While addressing the House, Shah remarked on the need for dignity in parliamentary discourse, stating, “It is your responsibility to uphold the dignity of this House across the country and the world.” He asserted that the language used by Gandhi could potentially harm this dignity, questioning the appropriateness of phrases such as “you are a coward” and “you are afraid of me.”

Shah underlined that the public is scrutinising both Gandhi and his party based on their conduct and language. He accused Gandhi of damaging institutional integrity and deviating from respectful discourse in his statements.

Priyanka Gandhi Challenges Government’s Stance

During this session, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also contributed to the discussion with a pointed critique of the government’s strategy regarding women’s reservation linked to delimitation processes. Drawing upon the wisdom of ancient Indian scholar Chanakya, she suggested that he would have been astonished by the political manoeuvring exemplified by Shah. “Had Chanakya been alive today, he would have been startled by your political shrewdness,” she remarked.

Vadra’s intervention momentarily elicited a smile from Amit Shah, highlighting the dynamics of their exchanges. Her perspective on the matter resonated with attendees, prompting further engagement within the House. She conveyed her belief that Shah’s laughter was a tacit acknowledgment of her assertions.

In an attempt to add levity to the proceedings, Rahul Gandhi remarked on his sister’s ability to elicit a smile from Amit Shah, quipping that she achieved in five minutes what he had been unable to do in 20 years. This light-hearted comment was met with laughter, illustrating a moment of camaraderie amid serious discussions.

Women’s Reservation Bill Fails to Pass in Lok Sabha

The proposed Constitution Amendment Bill, aimed at establishing a 33 per cent reservation for women in legislative bodies by 2029, was ultimately defeated in the Lok Sabha. The bill garnered 298 votes in favour but fell short of the required two-thirds majority, with 230 votes against it. Out of the 528 members who participated in the voting, a minimum of 352 votes were necessary for the bill to succeed.

This legislative proposal sought to increase the total number of Lok Sabha seats from the current 543 to a maximum of 850, preparing for the future implementation of the women’s reservation policy in light of a delimitation process based on the 2011 Census. It also intended to expand seat allocations in state assemblies and Union Territory legislatures to accommodate the 33 per cent quota for women.

Despite the robust debate and numerous arguments presented during the session, the failure of the bill marked a significant moment in the legislative agenda concerning women’s representation in Indian politics, and it remains to be seen how this outcome will influence future discussions on the matter.
