For years, Roland Garros represented both the promise and pain of Alexander Zverev. It was the venue where he produced some of the finest tennis of his career, but also where he endured devastating setbacks that threatened to define his legacy.
On Sunday, that narrative finally changed.
After years of near-misses, injuries and heartbreak, Zverev completed his long-awaited breakthrough by winning his maiden French Open title, achieving the Grand Slam success that had eluded him throughout his career.
The triumph was particularly meaningful given his history in Paris, where some of the most memorable and painful moments of his professional journey unfolded.
From Injury Agony To Grand Slam Glory
Few images in recent tennis history were as distressing as Zverev’s exit from the 2022 French Open semifinal against Rafael Nadal.
Competing toe-to-toe with the Spanish legend, Zverev rolled his ankle while chasing a ball and immediately collapsed in agony. The injury left him unable to continue and forced him to retire from the match. He later underwent surgery after suffering severe ligament damage and fractures.
The physical recovery was lengthy, but the emotional scars remained.
Two years later, he returned to the French Open final only to fall short against Carlos Alcaraz, extending the frustration that had followed him throughout his Grand Slam career.
This year, however, the story ended differently.
Battling through a demanding tournament and a gruelling final, Zverev finally lifted the trophy that had slipped through his fingers for so long.
Speaking after the victory, the German star reflected on his unique relationship with Roland Garros.
“This court is so special to me in so many ways. I’ve had the best moments of my life on these courts. I’ve had the worst moment of my life on these courts,” he said during the trophy presentation.
The Longest Wait For A First Major
Zverev’s breakthrough was not merely about winning a title. It was the culmination of years of perseverance.
The German had played 125 Grand Slam matches before securing his first major trophy, surpassing previous records for the longest wait before a maiden Grand Slam title in the Open Era.
For much of the past decade, Zverev carried the reputation of being one of the best players never to win a major championship. Despite regularly reaching the latter stages of Grand Slams and establishing himself among the world’s elite, the defining title always remained out of reach.
Since making his Grand Slam debut in 2015, he repeatedly found himself knocking on the door without managing to break through.
That changed in Paris.
His victory also ended a long drought for German men’s tennis. Zverev became the first German player since Boris Becker in 1996 to win a Grand Slam singles title, adding another layer of significance to the achievement.
Wimbledon Presents The Next Challenge
With the French Open title secured, attention now turns to what comes next.
The victory removes the biggest question mark hanging over Zverev’s career, but it also creates new expectations. Rather than chasing a first Grand Slam, he will now be aiming to prove he can become a consistent major champion.
His next opportunity arrives at the Wimbledon Championships, historically the most difficult major of his career.
Despite multiple appearances, Wimbledon remains the only Grand Slam where Zverev has never reached the semifinals. His best performances there have ended in the quarterfinals, making it the final major challenge among tennis’ four biggest tournaments.
The landscape of men’s tennis is also shifting. With established champions growing older and younger stars continuing to emerge, opportunities remain available for players capable of maintaining consistency at the highest level.
For Zverev, however, the immediate pressure has eased.
After years of being defined by what he had not achieved, he can finally call himself a Grand Slam champion. And given everything he endured on the clay courts of Paris, few major victories in recent memory have felt more hard-earned.
