Akhilesh Yadav, the Chief of the Samajwadi Party and Member of Parliament, has denounced the aggressive police response to student protests in New Delhi on July 20. He intends to bring up this issue in the upcoming session of the Lok Sabha, highlighting the government’s insufficient preparation for the level of youth participation in the demonstrations. Yadav stated that the use of batons, tear gas, and police in plain clothes signifies a critical failure to engage with the grievances of students.

According to Yadav, the large turnout of students represents profound discontent towards the government’s handling of their futures. This situation, he claimed, illustrates a major shortfall in governance, as the administration seemed taken by surprise at the mobilising capabilities of the youth. His remarks underscore the escalating need for addressing these issues as visibility of student anger has increased.

Asserting the depth of this frustration, Yadav declared, “The call for revolution is rising, and a sense of solidarity is evident. The youth have gathered in large numbers due to years of unaddressed issues.” He also stressed the need for the government to clarify its position regarding the Ram Mandir donation controversy, calling any alleged financial mismanagement a “grave sin.” Yadav urged the ruling coalition to take responsibility for this matter.

Condemnation from Party Members Over Police Conduct

SP MP Iqra Hasan also expressed strong disapproval of the police’s handling of the protests, labelling the demonstration as rooted in a “small and legitimate demand” for the resignation of the Education Minister. She voiced disappointment regarding the government’s treatment of young people, pointing out that the excessive use of force is unacceptable and indicative of an “arrogant” administration.

Hasan remarked that the gathering did not call for the Prime Minister’s removal but simply a necessary step regarding the minister implicated in multiple examination leaks, including incidents related to the NEET exam. She questioned the moral standing of the minister, insisting that resignation should be a matter of ethical duty. She noted, “They are not even willing to engage in dialogue,” referencing the lack of communication between the government and the protesters.

In her statement to the media, Hasan reaffirmed the Samajwadi Party’s commitment to the ongoing protests, insisting that they would take the students’ concerns from the streets into parliamentary discussions, ensuring that youth issues resonate in the legislative arena.
