Adani Green Becomes India’s First Renewable Energy Firm to Cross 20 GW Capacity

The CSR Journal Magazine

Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) has marked a significant milestone by becoming the first renewable energy company in India to exceed 20 gigawatts (GW) of operational capacity. This achievement has been entirely realised through the development of greenfield projects, making it a notable accomplishment in the sector.

With a capacity surpassing 20 GW, AGEL is now capable of generating over 52 billion units of clean electricity each year. This output accounts for nearly three per cent of India’s total electricity consumption, showcasing the company’s substantial contribution to the energy landscape.

The electricity generated by AGEL is reportedly sufficient to power New York City for an entire year or meet the combined annual electricity demands of the major Indian cities, Mumbai and New Delhi.

Rapid Growth Over a Decade

The milestone was achieved less than ten years after AGEL commissioned its first renewable energy project in Kamuthi, Tamil Nadu, in 2016. During the financial year 2025-26, the company added 5,051 MW of renewable energy capacity, which is the highest annual increase by any private renewable energy firm outside China.

Sagar Adani, Executive Director of AGEL, stated that reaching the 20 GW threshold underscores the company’s long-term vision and disciplined approach to execution. He emphasised that the scale of clean electricity supplied is now comparable to the combined annual power needs of India’s two largest metropolitan areas, thereby playing a vital role in enhancing the country’s energy security and transitioning to cleaner energy sources.

AGEL’s operational portfolio currently comprises approximately 14.2 GW of solar power, 2.7 GW of wind energy, and 3.3 GW of hybrid wind-solar projects. The company has also launched 3.55 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), which is noted as the most extensive battery storage project implemented outside China and among the quickest executed globally.

Importance of Energy Storage Solutions

AGEL has highlighted the increasing significance of energy storage solutions as renewable energy’s share in India’s electricity mix continues to grow. These battery systems are critical for ensuring that renewable energy can be supplied reliably, even when generation from solar and wind is inconsistent.

Reliable energy storage mechanisms enhance grid stability, allowing for a more dependable supply of clean electricity, particularly during fluctuations in generation from renewable sources. This aspect is crucial as India expands its renewable energy capabilities.

In its future plans, AGEL aims to commission an additional 10 GWh of battery storage in the financial year 2026-27, expanding its overall battery storage portfolio to 50 GWh over the next five years. This initiative supports the company’s ambitious goal of reaching 50 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, further solidifying its status as one of the leading developers of renewable energy globally.
