After 300-Run Thrashing, Shubman Gill Shares India’s Test Match Blueprint

The CSR Journal Magazine

India captain Shubman Gill has outlined a clear roadmap for the future of the Test team after leading the side to a commanding innings-and-300-run victory over Afghanistan in Mullanpur. The comprehensive win, achieved in less than three days, highlighted India’s growing depth and offered a glimpse into the philosophy Gill hopes will guide the team’s next generation.

Following the match, Gill emphasized that India’s formula for success is built on posting substantial first-innings totals and trusting the bowling attack to take 20 wickets in any conditions around the world.

Gill Sets Clear Targets for Team

Reflecting on the dominant performance, Gill described the result as a “complete win” and expressed satisfaction with the team’s execution in all departments.

The Indian skipper said the team’s long-term objective is to consistently score at least 350 runs in the first innings regardless of conditions. He stressed that such totals would allow India’s bowlers to dictate terms and put opposition sides under pressure from the outset.

India backed up that philosophy against Afghanistan by declaring at 564 for 8, with Gill leading from the front through a brilliant century. KL Rahul also contributed with a hundred as the hosts established total control of the contest.

Bowlers Deliver Ruthless Performance

India’s bowlers ensured the massive first-innings score translated into a one-sided victory. Afghanistan were dismissed for 152 in their first innings and then bundled out for 112 after being asked to follow on.

Washington Sundar starred in the second innings with figures of 4 for 36, while Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with 3 for 30. Earlier, Prasidh Krishna’s 3 for 37 helped trigger Afghanistan’s collapse, and Mohammed Siraj struck early after the follow-on was enforced.

Gill revealed that the decision to make Afghanistan bat again was influenced by both weather conditions and the fitness of his bowlers, who responded impressively despite the challenging heat.

Manav Suthar Shines on Debut

One of the biggest positives for India was the emergence of young spinner Manav Suthar. The 23-year-old from Rajasthan enjoyed a dream Test debut, claiming a match haul of 7 for 62.

Suthar became only the 10th Indian bowler and seventh spinner to take a five-wicket haul on Test debut, underlining his immense potential. Gill praised the youngster’s control, confidence, and ability to exploit helpful conditions.

Building the Next Era

With India gradually transitioning from a generation of experienced players, Gill acknowledged that patience will be crucial. However, he expressed confidence that the team is moving in the right direction.

The captain believes consistent batting performances, combined with a versatile bowling attack and emerging talents like Suthar, will form the foundation of India’s future success in Test cricket.
