Powerful Earthquake Kills at Least 15 in Philippines, Over 129 Injured as Tsunami Warnings Issued

The CSR Journal Magazine

A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines, leaving at least 15 people dead and more than 129 injured, according to the Philippine Office of Civil Defence. The devastating tremor triggered widespread panic across several regions and prompted authorities to launch emergency response measures while issuing tsunami warnings for coastal communities.

The earthquake, one of the strongest to hit the country in recent years, caused significant damage in multiple areas, particularly in the southern part of the Philippines.

Majority of Casualties Reported in Soccsksargen

Officials confirmed that twelve of the fifteen fatalities were recorded in the Soccsksargen region, which includes South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos City. Rescue teams continue to assess the extent of the destruction, with concerns that the death toll could rise as search and recovery operations progress.

In addition to the fatalities, at least 129 people sustained injuries ranging from minor wounds to serious trauma. Hospitals in affected areas have been placed on high alert as medical teams work to treat survivors.

Government Mobilises Relief Operations

In response to the disaster, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has activated emergency relief efforts. Secretary Rex Gatchalian directed local government units and disaster response teams to coordinate closely to ensure swift assistance reaches affected communities.

Authorities revealed that more than 1.1 million family food packs have been positioned across Mindanao and are ready for immediate distribution. Nationwide, around 4.7 million food packs have been prepositioned for deployment during emergencies.

Quick Response Teams have also been dispatched to monitor conditions on the ground and assist local authorities in relief and rescue operations.

Mobile Command Centres Deployed

To strengthen disaster response efforts, the DSWD has ordered the deployment of mobile command centres, emergency kitchens, and additional logistical resources. These facilities are expected to provide temporary support for displaced families and ensure the continuous delivery of essential services.

Government agencies remain on alert as aftershocks continue to be reported in some areas.

Tsunami Threat Prompts Regional Alerts

The earthquake also triggered tsunami warnings across parts of the Pacific region. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre warned that waves reaching up to three metres could affect sections of the Philippine coastline.

Authorities in Indonesia issued evacuation advisories for residents in northern Sulawesi, northern Gorontalo province, and the Sangihe Islands, urging people living near the coast to move to higher ground. Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines have all advised coastal communities to remain vigilant as officials continue monitoring sea conditions.

Emergency agencies have urged residents to follow official advisories and avoid coastal areas until tsunami warnings are lifted.
