4,000 EVMs Destroyed in Government Building Fire in Bengal

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Kolkata Police has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the severe fire that resulted in the destruction of nearly 4,000 electronic voting machines (EVMs) at a government facility in Alipore. This decision follows the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) regarding the fire that occurred on June 12 at the multi-storey building, which is home to various government offices, including those related to elections.

Allegations of sabotage have emerged amidst growing concerns about the circumstances surrounding the outbreak of the fire. Local authorities have stated that the EVMs, which were recently utilized in ten constituencies during the West Bengal Assembly elections, were stored in the affected building.

Concerns Over Cause and Spread of Fire

West Bengal’s Minister of State for Fire Services, Kaushik Chowdhury, expressed doubts about the nature of the fire, describing its sudden onset as suspicious. He highlighted that the EVMs were located on a specific floor of the building, which was previously home to various educational and horticultural departments. Crucially, the election offices were situated on the 8th and 9th floors, making the situation more perplexing.

Chowdhury noted that, while the flames were first detected on the lower floors, they inexplicably spread to the upper levels, which exhibited signs of significant damage, whereas the intervening floors were reportedly less impacted. This anomaly raised significant questions about the cause of the fire, leading to speculation of potential foul play.

The minister reiterated the necessity for a thorough examination of the incident. “It does not appear to be a normal fire,” he remarked, indicating that the inquiry will include whether sabotage was involved. The government is currently awaiting forensic analyses to clarify the matter further.

Composition and Mandate of the Investigative Team

The SIT tasked with investigating the fire is led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Sukhendu Mukhopadhyay, along with members from the Detective Department, including Inspector Hirak Dalapati, Inspector Arpan Das, and Sub-Inspector Suman Ghosh. The team has been directed to thoroughly investigate the origins of the fire and evaluate the extent of the damage incurred.

The establishment of the SIT demonstrates the seriousness with which officials are approaching this incident, particularly given the implications it holds for the integrity of the electoral process in West Bengal. Authorities aim to ensure that all factors related to the fire are meticulously examined to determine the definitive cause and any potential misconduct.

As the investigation unfolds, it is anticipated that more information will be disclosed regarding the specific circumstances surrounding the fire and its potential implications for the future of voting technology in the region. The public and various stakeholders are closely monitoring developments in this case, which is already raising significant concerns within the political landscape of West Bengal.
