At least 27 people were killed and several others injured after a major fire broke out at a pub in Bangkok early Monday, officials said. Firefighters took about 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control after it engulfed the venue in the northern part of the Thai capital.

Thailand Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the scene and said the injured had been taken to hospital, while authorities were investigating the cause of the fire. A musician performing at the venue reportedly saw smoke emerging from a circuit breaker near the stage shortly before the power went out and an explosion was heard.

Fire Engulfs Bangkok Pub Around Midnight

The blaze broke out at the Na Ladprao pub in northern Bangkok and was reported at around midnight, according to rescuers.

Firefighters battled the flames for about half an hour before bringing the fire under control.

Footage shared online by first responders showed flames engulfing the venue as smoke poured from its front entrance.

Thick black smoke could be seen rising into the sky while people attempted to escape the burning building.

Musician Saw Smoke Near Circuit Breaker Before Explosion

Anutin said a musician performing at the pub told him that smoke was seen emerging from a circuit breaker near the stage before the electricity supply was disrupted.

An explosion was subsequently heard, after which thick smoke rapidly spread through the venue, the prime minister said.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire and have not yet determined what triggered the blaze.

Anutin said those injured in the incident had been taken to hospital for treatment.

Many Victims Found In Restrooms At Back Of Pub

Many of those killed were found inside restrooms located at the rear of the pub, according to Anutin.

Photographs taken after firefighters extinguished the blaze showed extensive damage inside the venue.

Tables and chairs were charred, while large parts of the pub’s interior were severely damaged by the fire.

Thailand Has Seen Deadly Nightclub Fires In Past

Thailand has witnessed several deadly fires at entertainment venues in the past.

In 2022, 14 people were killed after a fire broke out at a music pub in the eastern part of the country.

On January 1, 2009, 66 people were killed and more than 200 others injured in a fire during a New Year’s Eve celebration at the Santika nightclub in Bangkok.

The Santika nightclub fire was apparently caused by an indoor fireworks display.

The latest Bangkok pub fire is among Thailand’s deadliest such incidents in recent years, leaving at least 27 people dead and several others injured as authorities investigate the cause of the blaze.
