The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent death of a teenager and the illness of four others in a Chhattisgarh village emerged from what had begun as a festive family gathering following a wedding. The tragic event unfolded in Ghurkot village, located in the Janjgir-Champa district, when five children suddenly experienced severe health issues shortly after consuming watermelon that was served within the home.

The incident transpired on Monday afternoon, fundamentally altering what was meant to be a joyful occasion. Within hours of eating the watermelon, the children exhibited alarming symptoms, including vomiting, abdominal pain, and difficulty breathing.

By the time their families rushed them to the district hospital, one of the children, 15-year-old Akhilesh Dheewar, was no longer responsive. Medical professionals later confirmed his death upon arrival at the facility.

Details of the Condition of Ill Children

Officials reported that the five affected children had been visiting their maternal uncle’s village after attending the wedding. They had had their meal around 12 pm, which included watermelon among other items.

Within a span of nearly two hours following their meal, the children began experiencing various distressing symptoms. Their worsening conditions led to confusion and panic among family members, who urgently sought medical assistance.

The affected children were identified as Akhilesh Dheewar from Podi Dalha, Shri Dheewar from Avreed, Pintu Dheewar from Khatola, Narendra Dheewar, and Hitesh Dheewar from Kotgarh. Despite the family’s rapid response to seek medical care, Akhilesh could not be saved.

Investigation into Possible Food Poisoning

The abrupt onset of illness and the subsequent death have prompted worries about potential food poisoning, leading the district administration to initiate a thorough investigation. Collector Janmejay Mahobe swiftly responded upon receiving reports of the incident.

In response to the crisis, teams from the local health department and administrative bodies were dispatched to both the Ghurkot village and the district hospital. Officials have begun collecting samples of the watermelon and other foodstuffs consumed by the children, sending them for laboratory analysis to ascertain the cause of their ailments.

Additionally, doctors preserved organ samples during the post-mortem examination of Akhilesh to further investigate the cause of death. As the investigation continues, the remaining four children are stable but remain under careful medical observation.

Dr S Kujur, the Civil Surgeon at the district hospital, confirmed that treatment commenced immediately for all five children upon arrival. “While we unfortunately lost one child, the other four are currently in a stable condition,” he reported. “Initially, it appears the cause may be food poisoning, and we are awaiting further results from our tests.” This tragic scenario highlights ongoing concerns regarding food safety in the region.
