1,076 Indians Deported From US in 2026 Amid Ongoing India-US Migration Talks

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has reported that 1,076 Indian nationals have been deported from the United States in 2026. This information was shared during a media briefing held on June 5, emphasising ongoing efforts to facilitate secure international travel. The MEA’s Official Spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, noted that these deportations follow a total of 3,567 individuals deported in the previous year.

Jaiswal explained that the Indian government is maintaining continuous high-level discussions with American counterparts concerning migration and mobility. This engagement aims to create an environment that supports legitimate professional and educational migration while mitigating illegal border crossings.

In his remarks, Jaiswal reiterated that Mauritius and Washington are united in their commitment to not only facilitate legal migration but also take decisive measures against unlawful migration. He stated, “We are in continuous dialogue with the US regarding migration and mobility to ensure that legal migration is facilitated while illegal migration is effectively curbed.”

Recent Enforcement Actions by US Authorities

Recent developments in US immigration arrests highlight the enforcement focus on individuals with a history of criminal behaviour. On May 21, 2026, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Los Angeles apprehended Parminderpal Singh, a 26-year-old Indian national, due to various criminal charges. This incident reflects the intensified action being taken by authorities against illegal migration.

Parminderpal Singh was taken into custody pending removal proceedings, as reported by ICE Los Angeles. The agency outlined Singh’s prior criminal record, which included vehicle theft, grand theft, vandalism, and trespassing. His arrest is part of broader enforcement efforts aimed at individuals deemed to pose a risk or violate immigration laws.

ICE released a statement on social media summarising Singh’s arrest and his charges. The agency indicated that he is currently held in custody while awaiting the resolution of his immigration status.

India’s Stance on Illegal Migration and Deportation Process

During earlier briefings, Jaiswal emphasised India’s steadfast approach to illegal migration. He articulated the government’s commitment to promoting legal migration pathways while discouraging activities that contravene those efforts. This stance is aimed at maintaining the integrity of migration processes.

Jaiswal noted the procedures involved when India receives information about individuals lacking legal status abroad. He stated that the government verifies claims of nationality before facilitating the return of individuals. This thorough verification process aims to ensure that only authentic citizens are repatriated.

He added, “Whenever there is a person who does not possess a legal status in any country, and he or she is referred to us with documents, we do the background check, confirm the nationality and then we are in a position to take them back.” This mechanism is crucial for managing the flow of Indian nationals facing deportation from various countries, including the United States.
