On June 21, 2026, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres underscored the significance of yoga, a practice originating from ancient India, during the International Day of Yoga celebrations at the United Nations headquarters. This year’s theme, ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’, emphasizes the crucial role of physical and mental health as populations across the globe age. The Permanent Mission of India to the UN hosted the event attended by diplomats, UN officials, and yoga enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds.

Messages of Unity and Well-being

In his address, Guterres noted the profound essence of yoga, stating, “We come together to celebrate an ancient practice emphasising balance, wholeness, and peaceful engagement with our bodies and the world.” He articulated how yoga has transcended cultural barriers, aiding millions from various faiths in achieving calmness, strength, and purpose in their lives. The UN chief stressed that the practice promotes respect and mindfulness for oneself and the environment.

Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, reflected on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to declare an International Day of Yoga 12 years ago. He highlighted Modi’s vision of making yoga a global phenomenon that encourages individuals to prioritise wellness, ultimately fostering international cooperation. He described the simple act of ‘Namaste’ as a powerful representation of unity between the mind and body and between humanity and nature.

Referencing the theme of healthy ageing, Parvathaneni reminded the audience that as people grow older, there should be a greater emphasis on utilising yoga for a smooth transition through this process. A banner promoting India’s candidature for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2028-29 term was also displayed at the event, indicating India’s broader diplomatic agenda.

Personal Testimonies and Yoga Practice

Yogmata Keiko Aikawa, an 81-year-old Himalayan Siddha Master, shared her personal journey with yoga, which she began at the age of 18 due to health concerns. Aikawa, who has dedicated over sixty years to the practice, asserted that true health encompasses more than the absence of illness; it involves living a life filled with purpose, gratitude, and vitality. She spoke on the importance of inner peace, suggesting that it can lead to peace on a global scale.

Aikawa’s remarks resonated with many as she addressed contemporary issues such as division, loneliness, and environmental challenges, asserting that peace starts within each individual and can radiate to families and communities. She emphasised that the paths of yoga and meditation can guide individuals towards a more peaceful existence.

The event featured yoga instructors, including practitioners from the Art of Living, who guided attendees through various asanas, breathing exercises, and meditation sessions. The gathering enjoyed these activities under a bright blue sky on a pleasant summer day, celebrating the essence of yoga together.

International Recognition of Yoga

The United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in December 2014, following India’s successful proposal which garnered support from a remarkable 175 member states. During the opening of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly, Prime Minister Modi described yoga as “an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition,” highlighting its holistic approach to health and wellness.

This year’s celebrations at the UN not only acknowledged the origins of yoga in India but also reiterated its importance in promoting health and well-being, particularly as the global population continues to age. The emphasis on healthy ageing served as a reminder of yoga’s profound benefits and its potential to enhance quality of life for people of all ages.
