Mamata Banerjee and her party, the Trinamool Congress have pitched high against the constitution (130th amendment) bill not only to oppose the Narendra Modi government’s plan to weaken the judiciary system but also to “assault on very soul of democracy”.
TMC high pitched against BJP
TMC is protesting against this on high pitch because, they have already started preparation for 2026 Assembly Elections in West Bengal against BJP and this will help them to became vocal against BJP along with “Bengali asmita” issue and “SIR” of Election Commission of India.
TMC already is campaigning on BJP ruled state’s drive against Bengali speaking people in the name of identify Bangladeshi intruders who do have fake voter and aadhar card. TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee also announced her party will not allow to implement SIR which already implemented in Bihar before assembly election in this eastern state.
Mamata says, “Bill will destroy foundation of democratic India”
Soon after the constitution amendment bill tabled at parliament, on Facebook, Mamata’s statement was nothing short of incendiary. She argued that the bill, if passed, would destroy the very foundations of democratic India.
“I condemn the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, proposed to be tabled by the Government of India. I condemn it as a step towards something that is more than a super-Emergency, a step to end the democratic era of India forever. This draconian step comes as a death knell for democracy and federalism in India,” Mamata posted.
According to her, this amendment will be diluted the judicial independence. “This is not reform. This is regression towards a system where the law no longer rests with independent courts but is placed in the hands of vested interests. It is a chilling attempt to establish a rule where judicial scrutiny is silenced, Constitutional safeguards are dismantled and the people’s rights are trampled. This is how authoritarian regimes, even fascist ones in history, consolidated power,” added Mamata.
Mamata placed the bill in a lineage of authoritarianism, describing it as “a Hitlerian assault on the very soul of Indian democracy”. The attack on courts, she warned, was in fact an attack on citizens: “To weaken the courts is to weaken the people. To deny them the right to seek justice is to deny them democracy itself.” Her conclusion was unambiguous: “The bill must be resisted at any cost! Democracy must be saved at this moment!”
TMC MPs protest in parliament
On the other hand, the TMC MPs tore copies of the bill and threw bits of paper towards treasury benches in the Lower House. Trinamool’s Kalyan Banerjee tried to tug at the microphone in front of home minister Amit Shah and shout slogans. Banerjee’s colleague Mitali Bag said Lok Sabha marshals pushed her during the melee.
While other opposition members were speaking against the constitutional amendment bill and two other bills tabled during the day, Banerjee and some of his party colleagues marched in the U-shaped Well of the House, raising slogans against the govt, tearing up copies of the bills and throwing the pieces of paper all around. Mahua Moitra, too, was in the Well, raising slogans.
Abhishek bats for Trinamool MPs
Later, speaking to reporters in Kolkata, Trinamool Congress’ National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee said, “You have seen the performance of our MPs today. Everyone recorded a dissent, but we opposed right at the introduction (of the bill). Recording a dissent statement means you are giving an opportunity for the Bill to be introduced. That is why we discussed with our Lok Sabha MPs and our party leader (Mamata Banerjee) this morning and decided that whenever the bill was tabled, we would oppose it outright.”
He accused the BJP of using brute force to silence dissent, even alleging that the TMC’s women MPs were assaulted and heckled inside the House. “We condemn this incident. We will take it up sternly. The BJP is perplexed and bewildered. They thought they would run the country like their own private or paternal property. We have shown them their place.”
Abhishek also ridiculed the optics of Union Home Minister Amit Shah needing heavy marshal protection. “The home minister, who boasts of a 56-inch-chest government, had to sit in the fourth row of the Lok Sabha being guarded by 12-15 marshals. This speaks volumes of the BJP’s ‘56-inch or Vishwaguru’ narrative,” he mocked.
