Gaël Monfils, a prominent figure in the world of tennis for nearly two decades, is set to embark on a new chapter in his life as he moves into the finance sector. Following his recent exit from the US Open, where he faced a straight-sets defeat against Learner Tien, the 40-year-old Frenchman revealed his plans to leave professional tennis behind. Monfils has confirmed he will be working in wealth management at a Swiss firm, Alpha Suisse.

The former tennis star, known for his dynamic court presence and entertaining style, is planning to participate in a couple more tournaments before retiring. He aims to compete at the ATP 250 event in Lyon from October 19 to 25, followed by a potential appearance at the ATP 500 in Vienna the following week. His last competitive outing will likely be the Rolex Paris Masters, scheduled from November 2 to 8.

This shift toward a business environment stands in stark contrast to Monfils’ flamboyant persona on the tennis court. He frequently captivated fans with his athleticism, inspirational plays, and spontaneity, which earned him the affectionate nickname ‘La Monf’. However, Monfils emphasises that this public image is just one aspect of his multifaceted personality.

Monfils’ Personality Beyond the Court

In a recent interview, Monfils acknowledged the surprise some have expressed regarding his choice of a serious career path. He explained that his home life reveals a markedly different individual than the one portrayed during matches. “You should ask my wife, you’d be very surprised!” he commented, suggesting that he is far more serious in his personal life.

The tennis player described himself as a perfectionist, preferring to ensure the execution of everything is correct and prompt. “I like everything done right away,” Monfils remarked, highlighting how these traits will seamlessly align with his forthcoming role in finance.

The transition into this new career is not a sudden shift for Monfils. He has been cultivating an interest in finance for several years and views this next step as a way to remain active in his professional life, particularly with his young daughter, Skai, commencing school soon.

Ongoing Connection to Tennis

Despite moving into a new professional sphere, Monfils clarified that tennis will still be a part of his life. His wife, Elina Svitolina, continues to compete on the tour, and he intends to support her in her career while maintaining a level of distance from the sport.

“I’ll still keep an eye on tennis because I love the sport, and my wife is still playing,” Monfils stated, noting that while he will remain involved superficially, he does not plan to engage deeply with the tennis community after his retirement. As he prepares for this new chapter, which he whimsically describes as ‘being a finance guy,’ Monfils reflects on his storied tennis career.

He gained recognition as one of the sport’s elite, securing 13 ATP singles titles and reaching a career-high ranking of No. 6. Despite the absence of Grand Slam titles, Monfils’ legacy will be highlighted by unforgettable moments and a unique flair that elevated countless matches.
