Mohan Bhagwat, the leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has initiated the UK segment of his overseas itinerary with visits to various places of worship in London. According to the organisation, these visits are part of a broader initiative intended to promote principles such as selfless service, social harmony, and the concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which translates to the world as one family. His schedule includes meetings with faith leaders, academics, and prominent figures in the community, aiming to foster mutual understanding and interaction.

Bhagwat arrived in London on Wednesday and engaged in a series of private roundtable discussions on Thursday. These gatherings involved influential members of the Indian diaspora, including business leaders and policymakers. Sunil Ambekar, a member of the RSS Central Executive Team, indicated that attendees from diverse backgrounds expressed considerable interest in learning about the RSS and its objectives.

The main attraction of Bhagwat’s UK visit is poised to be a community leaders’ reception and a dialogue on civilisational themes scheduled for Sunday. This event is themed “Celebration of Oneness” and is organised with the support of Integral UK, alongside Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh UK, a cultural organisation established in 1966 in Britain.

Interfaith Engagement Activities

As part of his commitment to interfaith dialogue, Bhagwat has already visited the Shree Swaminarayan Temple located in Willesden and the Khalsa Jatha British Isles Gurdwara. He is also scheduled to visit a Jain temple in London, reinforcing his engagement with various religious communities. The Sunday event expects participation from over 310 community organisations and associations throughout the UK, highlighting the diverse tapestry of the Indian diaspora.

Ambekar noted that discussions from the private engagements reflect a blend of perspectives, comprising both British citizens of Indian origin and local leaders, including members of Parliament. However, Ambekar chose not to disclose specific details about attendees, emphasising the need for discretion to encourage open dialogue.

Sunil Ambekar acknowledged that there have been concerns voiced by certain civil society groups and parliamentarians regarding Bhagwat’s visit. He responded by stating, “We are here for peace, integration, oneness and so we are open for a dialogue with everyone,” highlighting the importance of allowing diverse opinions in a democratic society.

Anticipated Public Address and Broadcast

Bhagwat’s public address to the diaspora is expected to occur on Sunday and will be broadcast live; however, there is no provision for interaction with the UK media. This approach is ostensibly designed to maintain focus on the core message of unity and understanding among diverse communities.

The UK portion of the tour encompasses multiple activities, including interfaith visits, closed-door discussions, and the larger public gathering focused on principles of unity. The RSS aims for these engagements to clarify misconceptions surrounding its philosophy and practices, fostering a more profound appreciation for cultural values and respect for various religious beliefs.

This comprehensive outreach programme aligns with Bhagwat’s previous visits to the US and Canada, indicating the organisation’s commitment to extend its reach and promote its ideals around the world. The initiatives in the UK signify an ongoing effort to create a cohesive framework for dialogue, integration, and mutual understanding among diverse faiths and communities.
