Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s remarkable ascent in cricket has led the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to focus on his future with a long-term development strategy. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia emphasised the need for the 15-year-old to be ready for ongoing success in the sport. The board aims for Sooryavanshi to mirror the illustrious career of cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar.

Discussions surrounding the young player’s future occurred during a high-level review meeting held in Mumbai on Thursday. Saikia noted the board’s commitment to monitoring Sooryavanshi closely. The final decision regarding his participation in the Duleep Trophy will rest with Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Saikia expressed that the board envisions Sooryavanshi continuing to contribute to Indian cricket over many years, akin to past greats. He stated, “We want Vaibhav Sooryavanshi or any player of his stature to continue and serve like Sachin Tendulkar did for the country.” Thus, the BCCI is adopting a comprehensive approach to ensure the player’s sustained progress.

Challenges and Achievements of Sooryavanshi

Sooryavanshi’s journey has already included both triumphs and challenges. Following an impressive campaign in the IPL 2026, he made history as India’s youngest men’s international debutant. However, his initial T20I series against England did not unfold as expected. He later bounced back impressively with 151 runs in three matches during the series against Zimbabwe.

His domestic performances have further highlighted his capabilities, as demonstrated in the Duleep Trophy semi-final. There, he scored 92 runs off 81 balls, making him the youngest player to secure a half-century in the tournament’s history. In the second innings, he added a quick-fire 40 runs, contributing significantly to East Zone’s advancement to the final.

Yet, his spot in the upcoming final remains uncertain, pending Gambhir’s decision. East Zone is set to face South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on September 6. Prominent players like KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, and Mohammed Siraj have been enlisted for the South Zone, while Sooryavanshi may join Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan, contingent on the coach’s approval.

BCCI’s Focus on Young Talent Development

During the review meeting, Saikia also revealed that assessing and nurturing young talent is a broader initiative within the BCCI. Sooryavanshi is among approximately 10 to 15 promising young cricketers being closely observed through the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence. VVS Laxman plays a key role in their training and skill enhancement.

Saikia remarked on the BCCI’s comprehensive focus, saying, “We are looking at all the players, not only Vaibhav’s relevance, but there are about 10–15 players who are in our targeted group.” He acknowledged that these upcoming players are consistently monitored by the head of the Centre of Excellence, VVS Laxman, who is deeply invested in their development.

Currently, Sooryavanshi is included in India’s T20I squad for the imminent three-match series against Afghanistan, commencing on September 13. Additionally, he will be part of India’s Asian Games squad, with VVS Laxman as the coach, furthering his exposure and experience at a competitive level.
