Derek O’Brien, a member of the Rajya Sabha from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), attended the Kolkata Police station on Wednesday in connection with a confrontation that occurred at the office of party leader Abhishek Banerjee. The altercation was reportedly linked to the removal of a billboard featuring the party’s signage. O’Brien arrived at the Shakespeare Sarani police station around 10 am, accompanied by Banerjee’s personal assistant, Sumit Roy.

Police Investigations and Accusations

A police officer confirmed that O’Brien was questioned regarding various details related to the incident, which took place on August 27. According to reports, Abhishek Banerjee had already provided a statement to the police on Tuesday, where he was questioned for several hours. Officials stated that Banerjee has been named an accused in two separate FIRs, and O’Brien, along with former MLA Humayun Kabir, has also been mentioned in the legal complaints.

The police had originally requested O’Brien to appear on Monday, but he requested additional time, citing insufficient notice. This request was denied, prompting law enforcement to issue another notice that required his presence on Wednesday instead. An officer involved in the investigation remarked, “We are questioning all individuals named in the cases and reviewing the available evidence. The statements of the concerned individuals are being documented as part of the ongoing investigation.”

The charges outlined in the FIRs reportedly include obstructing government officials during the execution of their duties, unlawful assembly, assault, and harassment of female personnel. The police intervened when officials from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation dismantled the billboard, which had been affixed to an iron structure atop a building along Camac Street.

Reactions and Arrests

Prior to his appearance at the police station, O’Brien alleged that police entered the party office armed with what he termed an “illegal” notice. He accused officers of assaulting senior party leaders and harassing supporters and staff. Additionally, he dismissed claims that private security guards put up resistance as “fake news.” The unfolding events have sparked significant media attention.

As the investigation progresses, the police have made 14 arrests related to the incident. They continue to interrogate those named in the FIRs while taking their statements. Authorities are keen to gather comprehensive information surrounding the case, which has become a point of contention within the local political landscape.
