West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari Restructures CMO

The CSR Journal Magazine

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has launched a significant restructuring within the West Bengal administration following his recent swearing-in. This marks his initial major action since taking office, emphasising the new government’s commitment to its “Sonar Bangla” vision. The appointments include seven prominent officers from the West Bengal Civil Service (WBCS) who will now serve in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).

The change was formalised through notification No. 904-PAR (WBCS)/1D-109/2026, dated May 10, 2026, and approved by the Governor. Each of the appointed officers will take on the role of Senior Deputy Secretary. This transition aims to enhance efficiency within the CMO and facilitate the implementation of the new administration’s policies.

The newly appointed officers are Pramit Das, Samrat Chakraborty, Amartya Chakraborti, Ayan Dutta Gupta, Rajarshi Nath, Dip Bhaduri, and Surajit Ray, with varying prior roles across different sectors, including fisheries and housing.

Political Landscape Shift in West Bengal

This administrative overhaul coincides with a significant shift in West Bengal’s political landscape. The recent Assembly elections, held in 2026, resulted in a substantial victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which claimed 206 of the 294 seats. This was a notable improvement from their previous count of 77 seats in the prior election.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC), which had previously dominated the political scene, found itself reduced to 80 seats from 212 in the past. The elections indicate a transformative period in state politics, highlighting evolving voter preferences and allegiances.

The swearing-in ceremony, where Adhikari took the oath of office, was attended by notable figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several Union Ministers, suggesting the BJP’s growing influence in the region.

Adhikari’s Journey and Vision for the Future

Suvendu Adhikari’s ascension to the role of Chief Minister represents a culmination of over thirty years in politics. He has transitioned from being a grassroots Congress worker to a significant political figure within eastern India. His journey illustrates the shifting dynamics within West Bengal’s political environment.

In his first address as Chief Minister, Adhikari expressed aspirations for a new chapter in West Bengal’s governance, referring to the “Sonar Bangla” initiative aimed at fostering development and progress in the state. He aims to streamline administrative processes and introduce reforms that align with the broader goals set forth by the BJP.

The current administrative changes are intended not only to enhance governance but also to deliver on the promises made to the electorate during the campaign. The appointments and subsequent restructuring reflect a proactive approach towards fulfilling the BJP’s vision for West Bengal, with a focus on improving public services and infrastructure.
