“Zero Plus Zero Equals Zero”: West Bengal BJP Chief Samik Bhattacharya on Akhilesh-Mamata meeting

The CSR Journal Magazine

The West Bengal BJP president, Samik Bhattacharya, has made strong comments regarding the recent meeting between Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav and West Bengal’s outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He dismissed the political relevance of this gathering, likening the interaction to a mathematical equation: “Zero plus zero equals zero.” He elaborated by stating, “Zero minus zero results in zero,” underscoring his belief that the meeting was inconsequential.

Cordial Discussion in Kolkata

The meeting took place at Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kolkata, where Akhilesh Yadav, accompanied by TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, held a closed-door discussion with the Chief Minister. Sources from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) reported that the atmosphere was cordial, with leaders exchanging greetings and discussing their political perspectives. Yadav reportedly commended the TMC’s efforts, stating, “What a commendable battle you all have fought,” and reassured Banerjee that “Didi, you have not lost.”

Following the meeting, Akhilesh Yadav raised serious allegations of electoral fraud concerning the recent assembly elections in West Bengal. He described this as involving “multi-layered mafiagiri,” implicating various entities, including the BJP and the Election Commission of India (ECI). Yadav asserted that the manipulation of the election process was unprecedented and expressed the need for unity in confronting this alleged fraud.

He highlighted the contrast with the prior Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, stating that the irregularities observed there had been replicated in West Bengal. Yadav claimed, “What the BJP has done in Uttar Pradesh was a betrayal. It was a trial that they learned from and applied in subsequent elections.” This statement served to emphasise his assertion of systemic issues affecting the electoral integrity in both states.

Concerns for Political Stability

In his address after the meeting, Yadav raised significant concerns regarding the use of central forces and the administrative machinery in West Bengal. He claimed there were ongoing complaints of irregularities and noted that officials were not being replaced despite these grievances. Yadav described the electoral framework as having developed a “parallel structure” during polling, which further complicates the legitimacy of the results.

Moreover, he voiced alarm about the treatment of political workers and security arrangements within the state, labelling the current situation as “unprecedented.” Yadav suggested that leaders, including Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, were facing “serious security threats,” adding a layer of urgency to the political discourse surrounding these issues.

Reflecting on the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, it was noted that the BJP secured 207 seats while the TMC, which has governed West Bengal for 15 years, won 80 seats. This marked a significant moment in the state’s political landscape, heightening tensions as parties prepare for future electoral contests.
