Varun Chakravarthy Loses No. 1 T20I Bowler Ranking After World Cup

The CSR Journal Magazine

Varun Chakravarthy’s tenure as the top-ranked T20I bowler has been brought to an end after an underwhelming performance in the recent ICC T20 World Cup held in India. Despite being a strong contender and securing 14 wickets to finish as one of the tournament’s leading wicket-takers, he has been surpassed by Rashid Khan in the rankings. Chakravarthy had initially claimed the top position in September 2025, following a remarkable series of performances, and held onto it until March 11, 2026.

Inconsistent Form During the Tournament

Chakravarthy began the tournament impressively, taking nine wickets across the first four matches, showcasing his potential. However, his performance began to decline during the Super 8 stages, and he failed to recover during the semi-final against England and the final against New Zealand. In the semi-final match in Mumbai, he conceded 64 runs in four overs while taking only one wicket. This trend continued in the final in Ahmedabad, where he allowed 39 runs in three overs but managed to secure the crucial wicket of Tim Seifert.

Final Statistical Breakdown

Concluding his World Cup campaign, Varun Chakravarthy’s overall statistics reflected a challenging experience, as he gave away 287 runs over 31 overs, leading to an economy rate of 9.25 and an average of 20.5 for the tournament. Despite his struggles in the later stages, he finished with 740 rating points, trailing Rashid Khan by 13 rating points. Khan did not participate in the knockout stages but managed to reclaim the top position nonetheless.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Notable Performance

Jasprit Bumrah, a key player for India, made significant strides in the rankings following his outstanding performance in the final, where he recorded figures of four wickets for just 15 runs. Bumrah concluded the tournament with 14 wickets, matching Varun’s tally but boasting a superior average of 12.42 and a more economical rate of 6.21. This achievement allowed him to rise to the sixth position in the T20I bowler rankings.

Axar Patel’s Rise in the Rankings

Additionally, Axar Patel experienced a jump in the rankings, moving up six spots to reach 17th place. He ended the tournament with 11 wickets across seven matches, reflecting a solid contribution to India’s bowling attack throughout the competition.

Intense Competition Among All-Rounders

The tussle for the top position in the T20I all-rounders rankings remains fierce, showcasing the competitive nature of the format. Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza continues to hold the top spot with a career-best rating of 328 points, while India’s Hardik Pandya is close behind with 299 points. Both players have demonstrated remarkable consistency throughout their performances. In the all-rounders’ rankings, New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner also saw a rise, reaching ninth place after climbing three positions, while England’s Will Jacks jumped five spots to reach 13th, reflecting his strong outings in the tournament.
