The Nepal Flood Relief Fund has received more than NPR 4.09 billion in contributions as public and private sectors, along with individuals, rally to support the efforts during one of the country’s most devastating natural disasters. The flooding has claimed over 600 lives and caused extensive damage across numerous regions.

Authorities are focused on providing immediate assistance to the injured and displaced families who have lost their homes due to the catastrophic flash floods. These floods struck on Wednesday, resulting in the destruction of houses, vehicles, roads, and bridges, while severely impacting hydropower projects.

By Saturday, the confirmed death toll surpassed 600, with more than 2,400 individuals reported missing. Rescue operations have led to the evacuation of nearly 2,500 people, including 163 foreign nationals, as teams work diligently to reach those in need amidst ongoing rainfall in affected areas.

Significant Contributions From Various Sectors

According to reports from The Kathmandu Post, corporate entities, banks, and various individual benefactors have committed substantial sums to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. This financial support comes as the extent of the damage to homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods is still being evaluated.

Among notable contributions, philanthropist Raji Rana, aged eighty-seven, personally donated NPR 10.98 million to Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle for relief activities. Additionally, Surya Nepal Private Limited announced a large contribution of NPR 150 million, while the Jyoti Group pledged NPR 50 million.

Other organisations such as Prime Commercial Bank and Agricultural Development Bank each donated NPR 30 million, with Nepal Life Insurance providing NPR 25.1 million. Significant contributions were also made by Morang Auto Works with NPR 11.1 million, Asian Life Insurance with NPR 10.1 million, and Agro Thai Foods with NPR 10 million.

Community Support and Resources Mobilised

The Nepal Chamber of Commerce has facilitated the donation of 17 surveillance drones to assist the Police Headquarters in their rescue and relief operations, as reported by Ratopati. Moreover, the Ncell Foundation is providing free communication services in flood-stricken regions and has committed to donating NPR 10 million to the relief fund, as stated in The Himalayan Times.

Since the onset of the floods, more than NPR 2.295 billion has been contributed to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund, enabling a significant increase in the fund’s balance from NPR 2.17 billion to the current total of NPR 4.09 billion. This influx of financial aid is crucial as the country continues its efforts in search and rescue, relief distribution, and damage assessment.

The overall impact of the flooding remains under ongoing investigation, and authorities are working tirelessly to provide relief to the affected communities. The collaborative efforts of government, private sector, and individual donations signify a strong national commitment to support those in dire need during this challenging time.
