Suryakumar Yadav has publicly expressed his thoughts regarding his recent removal from the captaincy of India’s T20I cricket team, indicating that he had anticipated leading the squad for an additional two years. His leadership period witnessed remarkable success, marked by India’s unblemished record in bilateral series and a victorious campaign in the Asia Cup.

An outstanding highlight came earlier this year when India claimed the title in a home T20 World Cup, making history as the first nation to achieve this feat three times. However, a downturn in Suryakumar’s batting performance may have influenced the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision. In 2025, he amassed 218 runs over 21 matches, with an average of 13.62.

Resultantly, the BCCI opted to appoint Shreyas Iyer as the new captain, and Suryakumar was subsequently omitted from the team selection prior to the upcoming England tour. In a conversation with former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra, Yadav explained that he maintained a positive attitude upon not being named in the squad, resorting to smiles as a coping mechanism. Despite his acceptance, Yadav expressed surprise at the BCCI’s decision, especially in the wake of leading the team to T20 World Cup victory. He questioned how such a change could occur shortly after such an achievement, reflecting on the emotional toll of the announcement.

The selectors reportedly informed Suryakumar a few days prior to the announcement of the squad that a change was necessary. He disclosed that upon receiving the news, he refrained from reacting negatively, emphasising a composed response in line with his character.
