The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has unveiled a new initiative aimed at reducing excessive screen time among students. This project prioritises reading and aims to improve children’s language and comprehension skills. With increasing concerns over mobile phone usage, the administration is stepping up efforts to encourage a culture of reading within schools.
DEAR Campaign Makes a Comeback
A key component of this new educational strategy is the revival of the DEAR—Drop Everything And Read—campaign. Under this initiative, students and teachers will dedicate specific time each week to read books of their choice. The aim is to foster a love for reading and make it a regular part of the learning experience. Schools are expected to create an environment where books become a primary tool for education.
Additionally, the government will ensure that 150,000 government-run primary and secondary schools receive daily newspapers, making reading a central part of everyday learning. This initiative not only promotes literacy but also connects students with current events, enhancing their understanding of the world around them.
Students will have the opportunity to participate in a reading challenge, where those who read the most books will be rewarded. The top reader from each school will be honoured with the title ‘Champion Reader of the Year’, aiming to incite healthy competition and encourage a reading culture. This program aligns with educational goals while addressing the growing concern over children’s screen exposure.
