US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer Visits India to Progress Interim Trade Deal Discussions

The CSR Journal Magazine

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is in India this week to advance discussions regarding the interim trade agreement that was initially agreed upon by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump in February 2026. His schedule includes meetings with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, as well as other senior officials from the Indian government. The aim of these discussions is to further develop the framework of the proposed US-India Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).

Details of the Engagement

The Office of the US Trade Representative announced Greer’s visit on Sunday, highlighting its significance in fostering trade relations between the two nations. During his time in New Delhi, Greer is expected to engage in substantive talks surrounding the historic joint statement made by both nations and the interim agreement that forms part of the larger negotiations for the BTA. These discussions are pivotal as the two countries aim to enhance their economic collaboration.

Greer’s visit follows recent discussions held from June 2 to 4, focusing on negotiating the terms of the trade pact. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal mentioned that the conversations are designed to refine the details of the framework agreement. Minister Goyal provided updates indicating that both sides are nearing the finalisation of the interim trade agreement, which is projected to enter its “very, very vibrant” first phase by mid-July.

While at the G7 meeting in France, Trump and Modi engaged in direct talks. During these exchanges, Trump expressed that the two nations are close to formalising the trade agreement and acknowledged Modi’s skills as a negotiator, reinforcing the personal rapport established between the leaders.

Future Travel Plans

Following his engagements in India, Greer will travel to Uzbekistan. There, he is scheduled to meet with key figures, including President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Head of the Presidential Administration Saida Mirziyoyeva, and Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khodjaev. The discussions in Uzbekistan are set to centre around establishing fair, balanced, and reciprocal trade relations with the United States.

Greer’s trip underscores the ongoing commitment of both nations to enhance trade ties, as the interim trade deal serves as an initial step toward a broader agreement. As the talks progress, both the US and India anticipate significant economic benefits that could emerge from the successful completion of this interim framework.

With the recent developments and scheduled meetings, the US Trade Representative aims to solidify the groundwork for a mutually beneficial trade relationship that is expected to foster economic growth in both countries. The outcome of these discussions could pave the way for enhanced collaboration in various sectors, reinforcing the importance of international trade in an increasingly interconnected global economy.
