US Launches Airstrikes on 140 Targets in Iran Following Hormuz Incident

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent escalation in hostilities began on Sunday when an Iranian attack on a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz resulted in significant damage and forced the crew to evacuate. A Cyprus-flagged container ship was reportedly set ablaze, highlighting the precarious situation in this strategically vital area. Following the incident, Iran allegedly launched retaliatory strikes aimed at Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman, expanding the geographical scope of the conflict that reignited on February 28.

The Strait of Hormuz has historically been a crucial passageway, facilitating the movement of nearly one-fifth of globally traded oil and natural gas. Since the recent outbreak of hostilities, concerns have heightened regarding Iran’s control over the strait, which has contributed to uncertainty in the energy market, though oil prices have subsequently decreased from peak wartime figures of $120 per barrel.

This new wave of violence emerged shortly after US President Donald Trump declared that an interim agreement related to the ongoing conflict was no longer viable, further exacerbating tensions between the two nations.

US Military Actions and Their Impact

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth underscored the seriousness of the situation, stating that Iran had made a poor decision and would face repercussions. In response, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf asserted via social media that the era of one-sided agreements had ended, emphasising Iran’s resolve to defend its interests.
