UP BJP Leader Assaulted by Family Over Alleged Harassment of His Wife

The CSR Journal Magazine

A BJP leader in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, Dharmendra Kumar Verma, was brutally attacked by his elder brother, nephews, and other family members after he opposed their alleged harassment of his wife. The incident resulted in multiple fractures for Dharmendra and has left him in a critical condition at Jhansi Medical College. This assault, reportedly captured on CCTV, highlights the ongoing domestic tensions within the family.

According to a police complaint lodged by Sulekha Verma, Dharmendra’s wife, the alleged harassment had been a persistent issue. She claimed that her brother-in-law, Rajendra Kumar Verma, along with his sons, Vikas alias Vicky, Harishchandra alias Kannu, and Adarsh alias Ninni, had been making inappropriate advances towards her over an extended period. She emphasised that these conduct issues intensified in her husband’s absence while he worked.

Sulekha recounted an incident on June 9, when she alleged she was subject to further harassment. Following this, she approached the local police to file a complaint but claimed no significant actions were undertaken in response, prompting her to escalate the issue to higher authorities on June 22. She subsequently alleged that the accused threatened them on June 20, stating that they would leave the family unable to “show their faces.”

Assault Incident and Response

The assault took place on the morning of June 24, while Sulekha was away gathering ration supplies. Reports indicate that the accused entered their home armed with various weapons, including iron rods and sticks, assaulting Dharmendra, who was present alone. They allegedly targeted his head and legs, resulting in critical injuries.

CCTV footage from the incident allegedly shows the attackers surrounding Dharmendra near a motorcycle and beating him viciously. Eyewitness accounts suggest that even after he fell to the ground, the assault continued. Further evidence shows the attackers disregarding attempts made by an elderly woman and other family members who tried to intervene during the attack.

Dharmendra’s injuries were severe, including multiple fractures across five areas of his body and a serious head injury that required ten stitches. Following the incident, emergency services transported him to Jhansi Medical College for immediate medical attention.

Police Action and Family’s Concerns

Following the attack, local law enforcement responded and registered a case based on Sulekha’s complaint. The Kotwali police initiated charges against the accused individuals, including Rajendra Kumar Verma and his sons, as well as their spouse, Manju Devi. An investigation is reportedly ongoing, with authorities conducting raids to apprehend the suspects using the available CCTV evidence.

Despite these developments, the victim’s family has voiced concerns regarding the police’s pace of response and action following the assault. Amit Pathak, a BJP functionary and Dharmendra’s associate, emphasised that the victim has been an active and dedicated party worker within the Scheduled Caste and Other Backward Class cell and previously held the position of ward president.

Pathak has publicly demanded the immediate arrest of all involved and called for stringent legal measures against them. This incident has raised significant attention towards the issues of domestic violence and the responsiveness of police authorities in handling such cases effectively.
