Family Alleges Abuse in Case of Delhi Newlywed’s Fatal Fall

The CSR Journal Magazine

The family of Akriti Sutar, a 28-year-old woman who tragically fell from a building in Lodhi Colony, Delhi, asserts that she was a victim of sustained abuse leading up to her death. Akriti fell from the NDMC Flats on the evening of July 7, 2026. Following this incident, her husband, Arastu Sikka, has been taken into custody, and a case has been formally registered against him.

Claims of Domestic Abuse

According to Akriti’s mother, her daughter had experienced months of abuse, including physical mistreatment and pressure for dowry after marrying Arastu on April 24. The family emphasised that they were initially opposed to the union but consented after being reassured by Arastu’s sister, who had introduced the couple, that he would treat Akriti well.

The mother alleged that, soon after the marriage, Akriti faced increasing demands for dowry, with her husband reportedly pressuring her to procure monetary gifts from her family. Furthermore, the family claimed that Akriti was often beaten and encouraged to leave her job, severely limiting her independence.

In her conversations with family members, Akriti allegedly expressed her intention to leave the abusive environment rather than considering self-harm. Her mother stated that Akriti had plans to secure employment, rent an apartment, and establish a separate life, away from her matrimonial home.

Discrepancies in the Investigation

On the day of her death, Akriti was at work in the Chhatarpur area of Delhi. Her family was in contact with her during the evening, but shortly after their last conversation, her phone became unreachable. They received notification from the Lodhi Colony Police confirming the tragedy shortly thereafter.

Akriti’s mother has called for strict measures against those implicated in her daughter’s death, labelling it a murder. The family has expressed their desire for justice, requesting that the investigation also consider the role of Arastu’s sister, who was alleged to have facilitated the matchmaking.

Continuing Investigation

The police are actively pursuing their investigation into the circumstances of Akriti Sutar’s death. Public attention has intensified on the issue of domestic violence and dowry-related harassment, with many advocating for stricter enforcement of laws concerning such abuses. The family demands accountability from all parties involved, emphasising the need for transparency during the investigative process.

The tragic incident has prompted discussions across various platforms regarding the social stigma associated with domestic violence, as well as the support systems available for women facing such challenges. The case stands as a reminder of the ongoing battles many women confront in their personal lives.
