Members of the UN Security Council, including Pakistan’s representative, visited the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York on September 10, a day before the 25th anniversary of the al-Qaeda attacks that reshaped the global response to terrorism.

US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz led the 15 Security Council envoys to Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan, where they reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorism and remembered those killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks.

UN Envoys Visit Ground Zero

The Security Council members toured the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, which stands at the site of the former World Trade Centre twin towers and houses remnants associated with the attacks.

The visit took place ahead of a solemn ceremony marking 25 years since hijacked planes were flown into the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001. The attacks killed thousands and had a lasting impact on global security and the international fight against terrorism.

Waltz said the visit reflected a collective commitment among Security Council members to oppose terrorism.

“We reinforced our shared commitment to peace, security, and a world free from terror,” he said in a post on X.

Pakistan’s Envoy Among Security Council Representatives

Pakistan, which is serving a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, was represented during the visit by its envoy to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad. Pakistan’s current term on the Security Council is scheduled to end in December this year.

The visit brought together representatives of all 15 members of the Security Council as the United States prepared to commemorate the anniversary of the attacks at the site where the twin towers once stood.

The September 11 attacks were carried out by al-Qaeda terrorists and orchestrated by Osama bin Laden. Bin Laden was later found hiding in Abbottabad in Pakistan and was killed by US Navy SEALs during a raid in May 2011.

Waltz Recalls Global Impact Of September 11 Attacks

Speaking about the consequences of the attacks, Waltz said September 11 had transformed the global security landscape.

“When this attack happened, it changed the entire world,” he said.

Referring to the years that followed, Waltz added, “The two and a half decades since, fighting the scourge of extremism. Now we have to be sure the entire world remembers.”

The visit by the Security Council envoys, followed by the anniversary commemoration at Ground Zero, placed renewed emphasis on remembering the victims of the attacks and sustaining international efforts against terrorism.
