UN Secretary-General Guterres Condemns Israeli Strikes on Beirut

The CSR Journal Magazine

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the recent Israeli strikes on Beirut, urging all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint during a period of critical diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran. Guterres expressed his concerns in a statement on social media platform X, highlighting that the strikes occurred despite an existing ceasefire. This situation arises at a time when Washington and Tehran are reportedly close to finalising an agreement aimed at resolving ongoing tensions in the region.

In his message, Guterres affirmed, “I strongly condemn today’s Israeli strikes on Beirut” and added, “The strikes took place despite the ceasefire and at a time when the US and Iran are expected to reach an agreement that will pave the way to a peaceful resolution of this conflict.” His comments underscore the deeply interconnected nature of regional conflicts and international diplomacy.

Consequences for the Global Economy Highlighted

The UN Secretary-General further noted the detrimental effects of the ongoing conflict on the global economy. He stated, “This conflict is having a devastating impact on the world’s economy,” emphasising the urgent need for all involved parties to exercise restraint. Guterres expressed hope for a successful outcome to the diplomatic efforts presently underway between the US and Iran, reflecting the broader implications of the regional unrest.

Meanwhile, officials in Iran have responded to the Israeli strikes with stern warnings. Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, stated that Tehran would retaliate against Israel’s actions. He informed state-affiliated media, “A response is ahead,” asserting that violations of Iran’s “red lines” would not be tolerated. Zolghadr called Lebanon vital to Iran’s interests and mentioned that “the unity of fronts has created a security chain in defence of the region.”

The recent escalation follows an operation conducted by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) targeting a Hezbollah command centre located in the Dahieh area of Beirut. According to Israeli military sources, the operation was a response to the launch of aerial targets towards Israeli territory earlier in the day. The IDF’s communication, shared on Telegram, indicated that the facility was allegedly used by Hezbollah operatives to coordinate attacks against Israeli civilians and military personnel positioned in southern Lebanon.

International Reactions and Future Implications

Hezbollah has also been active in the conflict, claiming responsibility for a drone strike targeting Israeli soldiers in the southern Lebanese town of Qantara. This reciprocal nature of the attacks indicates a heightened state of tension in an already volatile region.

Reports from CNN indicate that Israel had informed the United States prior to executing the strikes on Beirut and had taken measures to prepare for the possibility of Iranian retaliation. This adds another layer to the complex dynamics of international relations and regional security at present.
