Madhya Pradesh: Twisha Sharma’s Mortal Remains Returned to Family for Final Rites

The CSR Journal Magazine

The mortal remains of Twisha Sharma were returned to her family for the final rites following a second autopsy conducted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhopal. The family performed the last rites after receiving her body on May 24, more than a week after her death on May 12. Visual footage captured family members receiving her body from AIIMS Bhopal and placing it into a hearse van for transport.

Twisha’s family initially declined to accept the body until a second post-mortem was completed. This request was supported by a court order, leading to the collaboration of a team of doctors from AIIMS Delhi, who undertook the autopsy. The family’s insistence stemmed from their concerns regarding the circumstances of Twisha’s death.

Navnidhi Sharma, Twisha’s father, expressed previously that he hoped for impartial results from the new post-mortem examination. He stated that the family sought transparency in the findings, indicating their desire for clarity on the situation. He mentioned that the assurance given by the AIIMS team indicated a commitment to thoroughness.

Family’s Perspective and Legal Developments

Major Harshit Sharma, Twisha’s brother, expressed optimism regarding the second examination, highlighting the family’s expectation for an open and transparent process. This sentiment was echoed by Twisha’s sister-in-law, Rashi Oberoi Sharma, who set forth her trust in the medical team’s capabilities to produce honest results, reaffirming their demand for justice.

In support of the family, Advocate Enosh George Carlo arrived at their residence in Bhopal to participate in mourning rituals and to pay his respects. Speaking with the media, he conveyed his condolences, stating, “May her soul rest in peace,” during his visit to attend the prayer ceremony held for Twisha.

Meanwhile, the legal proceedings concerning Twisha’s husband, Samarth Singh, have progressed. A local court in Bhopal ordered the remand of Singh, who is deemed the primary suspect, to police custody for seven days from May 23 to May 29, facilitating further interrogation. Singh was arrested on May 22 in Jabalpur, following mounting allegations against him and his family.

Government Response and Ongoing Investigation

The case has garnered significant attention, leading to widespread outrage over the allegations of mental harassment and demands for an in-depth investigation. The Madhya Pradesh government has recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry to address the issues raised by Twisha’s family about the treatment she received from her husband and his relatives.

On May 27, the Supreme Court registered a suo motu case regarding possible institutional bias and procedural discrepancies related to the unnatural death of Twisha Sharma. The case has been titled “In Re Alleged Institutional Bias and Procedural Discrepancies in the Unnatural Death of a Young Woman at Matrimonial Home,” with a hearing expected to be held on Monday by a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant.

As the investigation unfolds, Twisha’s family continues to push for an unbiased and comprehensive examination of the circumstances surrounding her death, indicating a strong demand for accountability and justice amidst the tragedy that has affected their lives.
