An Indian-origin man is reportedly included among 25 individuals facing denaturalisation actions initiated by US authorities, which cover a range of serious allegations. The US Justice Department has characterised this move as the largest coordinated effort to revoke citizenship based on fraudulent activities. Among those targeted is 65-year-old Narinder Singh, who allegedly utilised a false identity to enter the United States.

According to the Justice Department, Singh’s fraudulent activity dates back to 1996, with his naturalisation as a US citizen occurring on May 1, 2008. The legal complaint against him outlines seven counts that allege multiple misrepresentations and unlawful actions that undermine his moral character. Other individuals facing similar charges include two Pakistani nationals, Zia Murad Bhatti and Mohd Wasif, who allegedly engaged in identity fraud.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche emphasised the importance of lawful and honest acquisition of US citizenship, asserting that citizenship is a significant privilege. He noted that the complaints allege that the individuals in question obtained their naturalisation through a variety of fraudulent means, including concealing past violent crimes and other serious offences.

Scope of the Denaturalisation Effort

The recent wave of complaints was filed between July 20 and August 3 and encompasses naturalised citizens originating from 17 countries, including Pakistan, India, and Mexico, among others. This broadening scope reflects the US Justice Department’s commitment to safeguarding the naturalisation process. Reckoning with the integrity of US citizenship is framed as a top priority for the department.

Blanche stated that the current filings are merely a beginning, signalling an ongoing determination to use all available resources to ensure the safety of the American populace. This indicates a substantial operational expansion within the department as it seeks to rectify perceived lapses in the naturalisation process.

As investigations and demands for denaturalisation progress, the Justice Department has indicated that the total number of such cases has reached 123 since January 20, 2025. This surge can be attributed to heightened efforts by the previous administration to rectify citizenship grants it believes were procured through unlawful means.
