United States President Donald Trump has conveyed that during his recent three-day visit to China, an agreement was reached with Chinese President Xi Jinping on significant geopolitical concerns, particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities. The discussions centred around the ongoing conflicts in West Asia and the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open. This engagement reportedly occurred aboard Air Force One as Trump spoke to journalists following his departure from China.

President Trump stated that Xi strongly believes Iran should not possess nuclear weapons, highlighting the gravity of this sentiment. Trump remarked, “He said that very strongly, they can’t have a nuclear weapon,” showcasing their shared view on this critical issue. The conversation also extended to the economic impacts Iran faces, with Trump noting that the nation incurred losses amounting to Rs 500 crore daily over the past two and a half weeks due to the United States’ naval blockade in the region.

The US President underlined the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, asserting control over this vital passage. Trump indicated that the Iranian regime has been significantly hampered in its operations throughout this period, a situation he attributed to the US’s affirmative actions within the strait.

Concerns Over Taiwan Addressed in Bilateral Talks

In addition to issues surrounding Iran, discussions also included the situation in Taiwan. Trump noted that President Xi expressed his desire to avoid any potential for armed conflict regarding Taiwan’s pursuit of independence. According to Trump, Xi does not favour a strong confrontation over this matter, suggesting a shared understanding between the two leaders on the importance of stability in the region.

The conversation evidently covered multiple facets of the Taiwan issue, with Trump indicating that both parties engaged in an extensive dialogue. He stated, “We talked about Taiwan and we talked about Iran a lot, and I think we have a very good understanding on both.” This dialogue highlights the delicate balance of US-China relations amid ongoing regional tensions.

During the interactions, Trump did not elaborate on previous commitments made by Ronald Reagan regarding arms sales to Taiwan. However, he acknowledged that the topic arose during his discussions with Xi. Responding to questions regarding the 1982 assurances, Trump said, “I think 1982 is a long way away.” He emphasised that maintaining open channels of communication is crucial, especially concerning sensitive defence matters.

Future Relations and Strategic Decisions

As the discussions wrapped up, President Trump reinforced his commitment to avoiding unnecessary military engagement, particularly when it involves distant regions. He articulated that the last thing the United States needs is a conflict that is 9,500 miles away, reiterating that contemplation of arms sales and defence strategies will be undertaken with careful consideration.

Furthermore, Trump expressed a sense of accomplishment from his meetings in China, describing the visit as a valuable experience. He praised his interactions with President Xi, recognising the complexity of the issues at hand but also signalling optimism about the understanding achieved between the two nations.
