Trump Not Ready to Consider Extending Ceasefire with Iran

The CSR Journal Magazine

US President Donald Trump announced on April 15 that he is not considering extending the current two-week ceasefire with Iran, although he suggested that a negotiated settlement would be the preferable way to conclude the ongoing conflict in West Asia. During an interview with ABC News’ Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl, the President articulated his belief that extending the ceasefire would not be required.

Trump expressed optimism regarding upcoming developments, stating, “I think you’re going to be watching an amazing two days ahead. I really do.” When pressed on whether the conclusion of the war would be achieved through a formal agreement or by neutralising Iran’s military capabilities, he acknowledged both scenarios as possible while underscoring his preference for a diplomatic resolution.

Potential Negotiations in Europe and Pakistan

In an earlier discussion with the New York Post, the President indicated that further discussions between the United States and Iran might occur within the next two days. He noted that existing talks were already underway, albeit slowly, and hinted at the possibility of a second round of direct negotiations aimed at resolving the seven-week conflict, potentially taking place in Europe.

However, shortly thereafter, Trump indicated a change of location, suggesting that Islamabad could be a more likely venue for the talks. He remarked, “Talks could be happening over the next two days. You should stay there, really, because something could be happening over the next two days, and we’re more inclined to go there.”

As per reports from CNN citing knowledgeable sources, Washington is evaluating the prospects of a second round of negotiations with Iran. US Vice President JD Vance is expected to lead the American delegation, with Islamabad emerging again as a potential location for these discussions.

Continued Diplomatic Efforts

Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who have been at the forefront of diplomatic efforts since the onset of the conflict, are also anticipated to participate should the second meeting materialise. The sources revealed that Trump has assigned his three senior advisers the task of exploring avenues for a diplomatic solution to the persistent tensions.

Vance, Witkoff, and Kushner have maintained communication with Iranian officials and intermediaries following a substantial 21-hour discussion aimed at advancing towards a possible agreement. Despite the active exploration of diplomatic channels, officials in Washington are still deliberating on the specifics of any second round of discussions, with no definitive plans established at this stage.

A US official stated, “Future talks are under discussion, but nothing has been scheduled at this time.” This sentiment reflects the complex nature of the ongoing negotiations and the cautious optimism surrounding potential resolutions to the conflict.
