Trinamool Congress Youth Leader Soumitra Banerjee Attacked With Eggs While Being Taken To Court

The CSR Journal Magazine

On June 16, Trinamool Congress (TMC) youth leader Soumitra Banerjee was allegedly attacked with eggs while being escorted by police to a court appearance in Raniganj, West Bengal. Authorities managed to control the situation and ensured Banerjee was safely delivered to the court for proceedings. His arrest followed a complaint made by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ravi Keshari, who accused him of attacking BJP party workers.

Prior Attack on Another TMC Leader

On the previous day, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh also faced a similar egg-throwing incident. Ghosh reported that he was targeted by local youth as he exited a meeting at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence. The TMC leader expressed disappointment over the attack, branding it as “unfortunate,” and asserted that he had lodged a complaint with the Police Commissioner. He suggested that those responsible were BJP supporters, describing them as “miscreants.”

Ghosh recalled that at the time of the attack, police were present, yet no action was taken to prevent or address the incident. He recounted, “I was responding to media inquiries when the egg was thrown, narrowly missing my eye which could have resulted in injury.” He noted the ironic nature of the occurrence happening near Mamata Banerjee’s well-guarded residence, emphasising the need for more effective security measures.

Following the incident, Ghosh made it clear that such acts of violence would not deter him from his political activities. He affirmed his unwavering commitment to his principles, stating that he would not back down, regardless of the potential for further violence. He addressed his supporters, expressing confidence in his beliefs, saying, “At worst, my dead body will lie there, but I will not change.”

Ghosh’s Response to Violence

In a post on social media platform X, Ghosh described the police as “spectators” during the incident. He reiterated that he walked alone to the police station to file his complaint, further asserting his independence and lack of reliance on external assistance for support. His remarks indicated a strong resolve to continue his political endeavours, despite the risks involved.

Ghosh also countered claims suggesting that the incident was indicative of public outrage, labelling those responsible as unrepresentative miscreants. He highlighted the contradiction of receiving such attacks outside a location that offers Z-category security to the Chief Minister, underscoring the paradox within the current political climate in West Bengal.

The TMC leader’s statement reflected both his determination and concern about the safety of politicians in the region, especially in the wake of recent violent acts. He expressed gratitude for the support he received from well-wishers while stressing that he would remain unarmed and unaffected by the actions of his adversaries.
