TMC Internal Conflict Intensifies as Rebel Faction Aligns with NCPI and Backs NDA

The CSR Journal Magazine

The turmoil within the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) escalated significantly on June 14, as a faction of the party declared a rebellion. Rebel Member of Parliament (MP) Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar announced that twenty Lok Sabha MPs had officially merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) and would extend their support to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Following a meeting with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Ghosh Dastidar stated that their group allegedly represents over two-thirds of the party’s strength, which warranted a separate sitting in Parliament.

During her communication with ANI, Ghosh Dastidar confirmed that the rebel MPs had submitted a letter requesting a distinct sitting arrangement in Parliament. “We are twenty MPs elected from the AITC and have met with the Speaker to request a separate sitting. This group constitutes more than two-thirds of our total strength,” she explained. The MPs will collaborate with the NDA under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Rebel MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay echoed Ghosh Dastidar’s assertions, claiming the court would ultimately decide on the legitimate claim to the TMC name. He emphasised that they had joined the recognised regional party, NCPI, and expressed intentions to pursue claims regarding the Trinamool Congress name in July.

Official Communications with Lok Sabha Speaker

Rebel MP Satabdi Roy confirmed the merger and stated that they formally submitted a letter to the Speaker. Arup Chakraborty, another rebel MP, mentioned that the group had put forth a demand to form a bloc in Parliament, reportedly receiving the Speaker’s approval. Chakraborty expressed that the MPs would seek cooperation with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as necessary.

In conjunction with their political changes, the rebel MPs reaffirmed their allegiance to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. They stressed that their alliance would aim to work in the nation’s interest and maintain support for one another as needed. Chakraborty recognised Saayoni Ghosh as their designated leader, reinforcing their commitment within the new political framework.

Meanwhile, consultations were reported within Kolkata, featuring TMC leaders like Kunal Ghosh and Gautam Deb, who visited TMC chief Mamata Banerjee’s residence to discuss the ongoing defections.

Counteractions from AITC Leadership

In response to the rebel faction’s actions, AITC MPs led by Kirti Azad met with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, presenting a formal objection against the alleged unconstitutional efforts to fragment the party. Azad referenced Supreme Court rulings to strengthen the party’s position, expressing confidence that these concerns would be appropriately addressed by the Speaker.

In the wake of the rebellion, Sagarika Ghose emphasised that the TMC remains an “indivisible” entity, condemning the defections as a manifestation of external influences undermining opposition parties. She articulated disappointment with leaders who campaign under the TMC banner now shifting allegiance post-election defeats.

TMC MLA Madan Mitra and other party members condemned the rebels as traitors, asserting that voters had supported them as TMC representatives. Mitra claimed their departure sets a negative precedent and hinted at ulterior motives behind the sudden defections, questioning the ethical implications of their actions.

Broader Political Implications

Senior TMC leader Saugata Roy described the rebel faction’s actions as fundamentally unjustifiable, asserting that they were betraying the mandate on which they were elected. Roy referred to the development as an anticipated yet unfortunate outcome of alleged orchestrated efforts by the BJP to undermine the TMC.

Congress MP Imran Masood additionally commented on the situation, urging patience as events unfold in the rebel camp. Masood emphasised the BJP’s overarching plan to destabilise opposition parties, a sentiment echoed by many political observers amidst the growing internal strife within the TMC.

The ongoing political crisis within the TMC continues to escalate, with significant numbers of MLAs and MPs reportedly aligned with the rebel faction under Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar’s leadership, highlighting growing divisions within the party’s ranks.
