The CSR Journal Magazine

A recent mobile phone theft attempt on a moving train in Bihar resulted in an unconventional response from passengers. The incident, which occurred on the night of July 9, involved a suspect being restrained through a window of the Janhit Express train until it reached the next station. Passengers managed to hold the accused, identified as Mohammad Fakhruddin, alias Chhotu, while the train travelled towards Khagaria railway station.

Details of the Theft Attempt

According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), the incident transpired while the train was stationary at Mansi railway station. Fakhruddin reportedly attempted to snatch a mobile phone from a passenger by reaching through a window. As soon as the passengers realised what was happening, they grabbed one of his arms to prevent his escape.

Despite his efforts to free himself, Fakhruddin remained trapped as the train began its journey. The passengers resolutely held on to him while the train continued to move towards Khagaria, leaving the suspect hanging outside the moving vehicle. Reports indicate that his alleged accomplices attempted to intervene during the incident but were unsuccessful in aiding his escape.

Arriving at Khagaria station, the steadfast passengers handed over Fakhruddin to the authorities. The GRP has praised the decisive actions of the passengers, which contributed to the suspect’s apprehension.

Widespread Attention and Arrest

The incident attracted significant attention on social media platforms, particularly due to the dramatic manner in which the suspect was caught. A video depicting the thief dangling from the train while being restrained by passengers circulated widely, amplifying interest in the case. The Khagaria GRP Station House Officer, Mohammad Alauddin, confirmed Fakhruddin’s identity and his residence in Naugachia, Bhagalpur district.

Following his arrival at Khagaria, police took the necessary legal actions. Fakhruddin was arrested and subsequently presented before a local court, which ordered him into judicial custody. The authorities have not reported any injuries to either the passengers or the accused during the unfolding of these events.

The police also took the opportunity to remind railway passengers to maintain vigilance while travelling. Travellers are encouraged to report any suspicious activities or theft attempts immediately to railway officials or the GRP to ensure safety and security on trains.
