Tencent Aims for Fresh Start in India’s E-Gaming Sector

Tencent, the Chinese gaming giant, is reportedly looking to reintegrate into the Indian gaming ecosystem after several years of withdrawal. Following the ban of PUBG Mobile, a game the company developed with Krafton, Tencent has now partnered with the Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC) and the Game Developers Association of India (GDAI). The collaboration was announced on May 15, 2026, highlighting Tencent’s intentions to support the growth of e-gaming in India.

Investment in Local Ecosystem

As part of this new venture, Tencent has committed more than $100 million towards initiatives that will enhance India’s e-gaming sector. This investment is aimed at developing educational curricula focused on gaming, facilitating industry training, and providing mentorship opportunities for aspiring professionals. The objective is to align with India’s ambition to train and employ two million skilled individuals in the gaming sphere by the year 2030.

Danny Marti, Tencent’s head of public policy and global affairs, stated that the company aspires to collaborate with local partners to create tangible pathways for talent and gaming studios. By integrating India’s creative potential with Tencent’s extensive expertise, the company hopes to foster an e-gaming ecosystem that is more interconnected and globally competitive.

This announcement marks a significant step for Tencent in rekindling its presence in the Indian market, having scaled back operations significantly since the regulatory changes in 2020 that affected its gaming products. Industry experts suggest that the recent shifts in the regulatory landscape may provide Tencent with renewed opportunities for engagement in India.

Among these titles are expected to be worldwide successes like Honor of Kings.
