Suvendu Adhikari Reports Record Voter Turnout in Bhabanipur

The CSR Journal Magazine

Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and BJP candidate for the Bhabanipur constituency, claimed a significant turnout in the recent elections, stating that more than 90 per cent of registered voters participated. During a press briefing on April 29, Adhikari asserted that this figure represents a record for the constituency. He emphasised that the turnout was notably higher than in previous elections, providing a comparative analysis of voter participation rates.

Referencing past electoral trends, Adhikari noted that voter turnout in Bhabanipur registered at 82 per cent in 2021 and 78 per cent in 2024. He suggested that this year’s engagement reflects a growing interest among the electorate in the political landscape of West Bengal. As the final polls concluded at 6 PM on the same day, Adhikari’s claims were made against the backdrop of what he described as historic voter participation.

However, the BJP candidate also raised concerns regarding the integrity of the voting process, alleging instances of irregular voting, particularly at several polling booths. He claimed that there were attempts to cast fraudulent votes, including reports of individuals attempting to submit fake ballots. Adhikari specifically mentioned that around 10-12 bogus votes were allegedly attempted, citing incidents involving men dressed in burqas attempting to vote in Ward 77.

Details of the Voting Process and Voter Demographics

The polling activity in West Bengal has attracted considerable attention, especially given the intense competition between political parties. A total of 142 out of the state’s 294 assembly seats were contested during this phase, with an electorate of approximately 3.21 crore. The demographic breakdown included 1,64,35,627 men, 1,57,37,418 women, and 792 transgender voters.

A notable aspect of this election cycle was the participation of women among the candidates; 1,448 individuals were in the running, including 220 women. Furthermore, over 8,000 polling stations were entirely managed by women, which indicates a shift towards greater gender representation in the electoral process. This environment fostered an atmosphere of increased civic engagement among voters, raising expectations around the outcomes.

The first phase of polling occurred a week earlier, on April 23, laying the groundwork for the high stakes of this electoral contest. The primary competition is perceived to be between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP, as they vie for dominance in the assembly elections. The context of the previous confrontations between these parties adds a layer of intensity to the ongoing debate surrounding voter turnout and electoral integrity.

Upcoming Electoral Results and Significance

The results of the West Bengal elections are scheduled for announcement on May 4, coinciding with results from other regions, including Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry. The anticipation surrounding the outcomes not only reflects the political climate in West Bengal but also the broader implications for party strategies across India.

The claims made by Suvendu Adhikari regarding voter turnout and alleged irregularities will likely be examined in the context of these results. The election process in Bhabanipur, marked by both high engagement and alleged discrepancies, highlights the complexities of democratic participation in the region.

As the opposition scrutinises the voting process and its implications, the eventual outcome will play a crucial role in shaping the political narrative that unfolds in West Bengal and beyond. The high stakes of this electoral battleground serve as a focal point of contention in light of the larger national political landscape.
