Stone-Pelting in Mumbai’s Garib Nagar Slums Amid Demolition Drive

The CSR Journal Magazine

The demolition drive ordered by the Bombay High Court at Garib Nagar in Bandra East turned tumultuous on Wednesday as residents reacted violently against officials and police. Reports indicate that over 200 houses were demolished during this operation, leading to confrontations between the crowd and law enforcement, which resorted to lathi charges to disperse the gathering. Several individuals were reportedly arrested in connection with these events.

The demolition is being executed by Western Railway as part of an initiative to remove approximately 400 unauthorised structures on railway land, which includes an illegal religious site near Bandra East station. As per the court’s directive, this operation is projected to carry on for at least two more days.

Eligibility for Rehabilitation Limited

Western Railway stated that only about 100 individuals, identified as eligible for rehabilitation through surveys conducted in August 2021, will receive alternative accommodation. The remaining structures targeted for demolition are characterised as illegal encroachments on railway property.

Infrastructure Development Underpins Demolition Initiative

The land clearance, which spans about 500 metres adjacent to the railway tracks, is earmarked for the extension of the fifth and sixth railway lines on the Santacruz-Mumbai Central corridor. This enhancement aims to facilitate the operation of an additional 50 trains originating from Mumbai, alleviating congestion on existing suburban services and improving connectivity between Bandra suburban station and Bandra Terminus.

Implications for the Future of Mumbai’s Slum Dwellers

Overall, the situation encapsulates the ongoing struggle between urban development and the rights of the city’s impoverished populations. As Mumbai continues to evolve, the balance between these competing interests remains a critical concern for its citizens and policymakers alike.
