SpiceJet Cancels 87 Flights as UAE Airspace Closure Disrupts West Asia Routes

The CSR Journal Magazine

SpiceJet has announced the cancellation of 87 flights on March 2, which includes 37 departures and 50 arrivals at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. This action results from ongoing disruptions due to airspace closures in the United Arab Emirates amid escalating tensions in West Asia, as confirmed by airport sources. The cancellations affect a range of services linking Indian cities with Dubai and Sharjah over the course of March 2 and 3.

Specific Flights Canceled

According to the information from Delhi Airport, several flights scheduled from Dubai to notable Indian cities, including Pune, Mumbai, Amritsar, Calicut, Madurai, Kochi, Ahmedabad, and Delhi, have been canceled. Services between Sharjah and Ahmedabad are also among those affected. In addition, departures scheduled from Mumbai, Amritsar, Madurai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Pune, Kochi, and Calicut to both Dubai and Sharjah have been suspended due to the prevailing airspace restrictions. The airline has identified the closure of UAE airspace as the primary reason for these disruptions.

Limited Resumption of Operations Announced

Following the severe disruptions, Dubai Airports confirmed a limited resumption of operations as of March 2, permitting a small number of flights to commence from both Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). Passengers are advised against traveling to the airports unless they have been specifically informed by their airline regarding confirmed departure times.

Emirates and Other Airlines Respond

In a notification on X, Emirates stated that it plans to operate a limited number of flights starting in the evening of March 2. The airline will prioritize travelers who have earlier bookings, and it has indicated that only those who have been rebooked and officially notified should come to the airport, as all other flights remain suspended until further notice. Emirates emphasized that the safety of its passengers and crew is paramount and that the situation is under continuous review for further updates.

Akasa Air and Oman Air Cancel Flights

Akasa Air has also declared the suspension of its flights to and from Abu Dhabi, Doha, Jeddah, Kuwait, and Riyadh for March 3. The airline is providing full refunds or the option for free rescheduling for bookings related to these destinations until March 7, with eligible refunds to be processed within seven days. Passengers are being urged to verify their flight status prior to proceeding to the airport.

Meanwhile, Oman Air has canceled all flights for March 3 to various locations, including Amman, Dubai, Bahrain, Doha, Dammam, Kuwait, Copenhagen, and Baghdad due to the ongoing regional airspace issues. Although other operations continue, delays should be anticipated. This partial reopening in Dubai occurred shortly after major airlines such as IndiGo and Qatar Airways announced the suspension or extension of flight cancellations in response to the escalating situation in West Asia.
