Sonam Wangchuk Hospitalised After 20-Day Hunger Strike Ahead of Parliament March

The CSR Journal Magazine

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar for the past 20 days, was taken to a hospital by Delhi Police on Saturday morning, officials said. The development comes just two days before he and his supporters are scheduled to march to Parliament.

A heavy deployment of Delhi Police personnel was seen at the protest site following Wangchuk’s hospitalisation. Authorities have not yet provided details about his condition or the circumstances that led to his transfer to hospital.

Health Concerns During Hunger Strike

On Friday, Wangchuk’s health parameters indicated continued deterioration after nearly three weeks of fasting.

According to Dr Satish Lamba of the Delhi Medical Association, Wangchuk’s weight stood at 56.55 kg, reflecting a loss of 350 grams over the previous 24 hours. His blood pressure was recorded at 108/68, blood sugar at 70 mg/dL and pulse rate at 72 beats per minute.

Late on Friday night, Abhijeet Dipke, Founding President of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), alleged that Wangchuk had been attacked at the protest site in Jantar Mantar. No official confirmation of the allegation was immediately available.

Opposition Leaders Extend Support

Several Opposition leaders visited Wangchuk at Jantar Mantar on Friday to express solidarity and enquire about his health.

Those who met him included Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) MP Supriya Sule, Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav, Congress leader Pawan Khera and Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray criticised the Centre over Wangchuk’s hunger strike, describing it as the “most insensitive government” and alleging that it had failed to respond to the activist’s demands despite his prolonged fast.

AIMIM national spokesperson Waris Pathan also appealed to the Centre to hold discussions with Wangchuk and consider his demands, while urging students and parents to support his campaign.

High Court Ordered Daily Medical Monitoring

On Thursday, the Delhi High Court directed that Wangchuk’s health be clinically monitored every day during his hunger strike.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia observed that “the life of every citizen is precious and all efforts ought to be made by the government authorities to save the same.”

The court also directed that any medical intervention considered necessary by government doctors should be provided. The order was passed while disposing of a public interest litigation expressing concern over Wangchuk’s deteriorating health.

Protest and Planned Parliament March

Wangchuk, an engineer, education reformer and climate activist from Ladakh, has been on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged nationwide examination irregularities, including the NEET paper leak controversy.

He and his supporters have also announced a march to Parliament on July 20 to press for their demands.
