The CSR Journal Magazine

Six workers tragically lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries following the collapse of a section of an under-construction bridge in Hamirpur district, Uttar Pradesh. This incident occurred around 3 am on May 29, 2026, amid severe storm conditions. The bridge was located over the Betwa River and was intended to connect the Mora Kandaur and Kurara areas.

Reports indicate that strong winds, combined with adverse weather, caused a slab of the bridge to give way, leading to the workers being trapped beneath the rubble. Local officials stated that prompt actions were taken to address the situation, and rescue teams quickly mobilised to the site.

As emergency responders arrived, they began the search operation, fearing that additional workers might still be caught under the debris. Authorities have been coordinating efforts to ensure rapid assistance for those who were injured.

Response and Relief Efforts

Immediately following the collapse, rescue and relief operations were initiated. Teams from local police and the district administration worked alongside emergency services to locate and aid the affected workers. Some injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

While rescuers managed to save three workers trapped under a pillar, concerns remain regarding the possibility of others involved in the incident. The operations are ongoing as authorities continue their search efforts meticulously at the collapsed site.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his sorrow regarding the loss of life and announced compensation measures for the victims’ families. The state government is providing an ex gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to the families of those who died in the incident. Furthermore, financial aid of Rs 50,000 has been allocated for the injured parties.

Official Statements and Investigation

Hamirpur District Magistrate Abhishek Goyal confirmed that the construction of the bridge was being handled by a private company and had been underway for nearly two years. He reassured the public that safety measures for the workers had been implemented at the site prior to the disaster.

Those confirmed deceased in this tragic event have been named as Lokendra (22), Kuldeep Nishad (19), Sawant Yadav (28), Sabhajeet (30), Pushpendra Chauhan (34), and Rajesh Pal (42). The identification of the victims underscores the human cost of this construction failure.

The Chief Minister has further directed officials to monitor the ongoing rescue efforts closely and to ensure that affected individuals receive adequate medical care. Condolences have been extended to the families of the deceased, demonstrating the government’s commitment to supporting those impacted by this tragedy.
