Seventeen-Year-Old Boy Stabbed to Death in Baruipur, West Bengal

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 17-year-old boy was allegedly stabbed to death in Baruipur, West Bengal, reportedly over an ongoing dispute related to a recent football match. The incident occurred on Monday, just days after a minor’s horrifying rape and murder in the same locality. According to local reports, the victim was attacked with a sharp weapon near a bank in the Palpara area of Baruipur.

Sources claim that the conflict arose from tensions following a football match held three days prior, where the victim’s team had won. This victory allegedly resulted in a heated argument between rival groups, leading to escalating animosity in the days that followed. On Monday, the victim and a friend were allegedly lured to a specific location by the accused, where they were confronted.

Upon their arrival, the victim was reportedly assaulted with a knife, resulting in severe injuries to his neck. He was subsequently rushed to Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital, but doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

Heightened Communal Tensions Following Death

The fatal incident has triggered significant communal tensions in Baruipur, with members of the Hindu Jagaran Manch and local residents alleging that police failed to disclose the identities of the three accused, claiming they belong to a particular religious community. Some community leaders have branded the death as an instance of ‘jihadist violence’ and called for an end to alleged ‘jihadi appeasement’ in the region.

Protesters blocked roads outside the hospital, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible for the killing. The situation escalated when demonstrators engaged in violent acts, including vandalising a police camp situated within the hospital premises. In response, police detained the three suspects in connection with the murder and escorted them for mandatory medical examinations, further inflaming the crowd’s anger.

To restore order, law enforcement resorted to a lathi charge. Additional police forces were deployed around the hospital and other sensitive areas in Baruipur to mitigate the situation and prevent further unrest.

Political Fallout for the West Bengal Government

This incident marks a significant challenge for the Suvendu Adhikari administration, as it comes nearly two months after assuming power. The administration is already under scrutiny due to the recent rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Baruipur, whose body was discovered in a gunny bag. An autopsy indicated that the girl had been subjected to sexual torture before her death.

Concerns have been raised over the local police’s responsiveness, with the girl’s family alleging that authorities delayed the investigation following her disappearance. There are also claims that a local BJP leader, Shantanu Mondol, aided one of the accused in evading police capture. The convergence of these incidents has raised alarm about the worsening law-and-order situation in West Bengal.

To address public concern and reaffirm commitment to justice, measures are being initiated by the administration. The Chief Minister visited the home of the rape and murder victim to express condolences, while cabinet minister Agnimitra Paul went to the deceased boy’s family’s residence. The police have also apprehended several individuals allegedly connected to both crimes to further ensure accountability.
