Seven-Year-Old Boy Dies After Being Trapped in Lift in Pune

The CSR Journal Magazine

A seven-year-old boy tragically passed away after reportedly becoming trapped inside a lift at a residential building in Nimbaj Nagar, Pune. The event occurred on May 20, while the child was playing outside his home. His father, Shailesh Dhoot, recounted the ordeal, detailing how the family began searching for the boy when he did not return from the playground.

Dhoot mentioned that after his daughter returned home without her brother, the family grew concerned. “Upon asking my daughter about Shivansh, she informed me that he had not come to the playground,” he said. This prompted both parents to search for their son, ultimately leading his wife to notice that the lift was stuck. She discovered Shivansh lying inside, trapped between the lift and the passageway below.

The boy’s condition prompted immediate action, as the family and passersby broke open the lift door to rescue him. Dhoot stated that the emergency services were promptly alerted following their discovery, as they made frantic attempts to revive him. He noted that his son typically did not use the lift for play.

Emergency Response and Investigation

Authorities, including the local fire brigade and police, quickly arrived at the scene after the incident was reported. Rescue efforts were initiated without delay, but unfortunately, they were unable to save the boy. The police confirmed the situation and stated that an accidental death case has been registered at Sinhgad Road Police Station.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the precise circumstances that led to this tragic event. Officials are looking into the safety features of the lift and whether any negligence occurred leading up to the incident. The aim is to ensure that such occurrences do not happen again, and thorough assessments will be conducted as part of the investigation.

This incident has raised concerns regarding lift safety in residential buildings, prompting discussions on the need for better safety protocols and inspections to prevent further tragedies.

Similar Incidents Highlight Safety Concerns

Tragic incidents involving lifts have been reported previously, indicating a pressing need for improved regulations. Earlier this year, in February, five individuals sustained injuries when a lift fell from the fourth floor of Jay Krupa Tower in Byculla East, Mumbai. This occurrence was reportedly linked to a cable failure.

Assistant Divisional Fire Officer VN Sangle disclosed that the collapse happened around 9 pm, leading to an immediate response from emergency teams, which included the Mumbai Fire Brigade and local police. The injured were promptly taken to hospitals for treatment, exemplifying the critical need for swift emergency response procedures.

Such incidents stress the importance of regular maintenance and inspections of lift systems, particularly in residential settings. The recent loss in Pune serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with malfunctioning lifts and highlights the responsibility of building management to ensure the safety of residents.
