Satabdi Roy Signals NDA Alliance Amid TMC Rebellion

The CSR Journal Magazine

The ongoing dissent within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) appears to be steering towards a formal alliance with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), as indicated by rebel Member of Parliament (MP) Satabdi Roy. Following discussions in New Delhi, Roy expressed that the faction of dissenting MPs intends to collaborate closely with the BJP-led coalition. Roy’s commentary signifies a significant shift for the breakaway group from their former party alignment.

Upon her return to Kolkata, Roy reiterated that while the rebel faction is in its initial stages, their political trajectory is aimed at aligning with the NDA. She stated, “We will be NDA allies,” marking the clearest signal yet of where this faction plans to position itself following their separation from the TMC.

This announcement follows the merger of twenty dissenting TMC Lok Sabha MPs with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), a lesser-known political group that is not yet widely recognized. The rebels are thus seeking formal recognition in Parliament.

Roy also reflected on her long-standing relationship with the TMC, recalling how she remained loyal to the party during its difficulties in 2009. “I have given 17 years. Complaints had piled up like a mountain,” she lamented, acknowledging the emotional difficulty surrounding her decision to part ways with the organisation.

Despite her criticism, Roy lauded Abhishek Banerjee for his political potential, stating, “I still believe Abhishek is a very intelligent and sensible young man.” While acknowledging his capabilities, she suggested that he has deviated from a promising political course, indicating a distinction between his abilities and the current direction of the party.

Motivations Behind Merging with NCPI

The choice to merge with the NCPI rather than transitioning directly to the BJP has raised eyebrows among political analysts. Observers indicate that this decision might have been influenced by legal considerations alongside political motivations. The rebels would have encountered procedural challenges if they had attempted to sever ties with the TMC outright.

By aligning with an existing registered party, the dissenters believe they have established a more robust legal foundation for seeking separate recognition in the Lok Sabha. A senior member of the rebel faction described the decision as one based on “practical considerations rather than ideology,” emphasising the importance of operating collectively outside of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s control.

The rebels have already reached out to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to communicate their merger and have requested distinct seating arrangements in the House. This strategic move highlights their aim of navigating the parliamentary landscape more effectively.

Implications of the Ongoing Crisis

The rebellion represents one of the most significant challenges faced by the TMC in recent years. Originating in the West Bengal Assembly, a large group of party legislators has distanced themselves from the official TMC legislature party. The unrest has since escalated to the national level, with dissenting MPs asserting support from over twenty Lok Sabha members.

With Satabdi Roy now publicly announcing the intention of the rebel faction to align with the NDA, this development marks a new phase in the political struggle that could potentially reshape the opposition landscape in West Bengal. This alignment may also bolster the BJP-led alliance’s standing within Parliament.

For the moment, the rebels affirm that they are merely at the outset of their journey. “We are still in the very early stages,” Roy concluded, although her declaration of future alliance with the NDA clarifies their evolving political ambitions.
