Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Saugata Roy has expressed unwavering support for Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, following Gandhi’s remarks aimed at Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Roy publicly dismissed calls for Gandhi to apologise, stating, “What he said is correct. There is no question of apologising.”

The context of this endorsement arose after Gandhi sharply criticised the government in connection with alleged police actions during the student protests that occurred on July 20. He asserted that Shah’s absence from Parliament indicated a sense of fear, which further intensifies the ongoing political skirmish.

Political Backlash and Criticism

The remarks made by Gandhi did not go unchallenged, as BJP MP Shashank Mani Tripathi articulated his discontent towards Gandhi’s approach. Tripathi accused Gandhi of neglecting to engage in constructive dialogue. “I believe Rahul Gandhi needs to change his attitude. He is the Leader of the Opposition in the world’s largest democracy. You do not present substantive points or offer analysis,” Tripathi commented, implying that Gandhi’s criticisms lacked depth.

In a rapid response to Gandhi’s statements, Kiren Rijiju, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, took the initiative to counteract the allegations during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. He characterised Gandhi’s remarks as “irresponsible” and claimed they damaged the dignity associated with his constitutional role. Rijiju described Gandhi’s comments as unsubstantiated, arguing that the Leader of the Opposition should refrain from making baseless assertions against a senior minister.

Rijiju’s irritation was palpable as he remarked, “This is a clear breach of his position and privilege,” signifying the heightened tensions within Parliament in response to Gandhi’s comments.

Speaker’s Intervention and Further Developments

Amid the escalating uproar, Speaker Om Birla intervened, issuing a caution to Gandhi regarding the importance of substantiating his allegations with evidence. Birla emphasized that Parliament serves as a platform for reasoned debate and factual discussion rather than unfounded accusations.

Following the adjournment of the Lok Sabha, Gandhi spoke to the media, presenting two possible scenarios regarding the police actions during the protests. He stated, “There can be two possible scenarios. One is that the Home Minister issued the order. The second is that the Home Minister was unaware that firing would take place.” According to Gandhi, the implications of either scenario place blame on Shah, either for culpability or incompetence.

Gandhi elaborated further, stating, “If the Home Minister didn’t even know that shots were being fired, it means he is incompetent; otherwise, if he ordered it, he is culpable.” This statement encapsulates the growing discord between the Congress party and the ruling BJP, as tensions remain high in the current political landscape of India.
